This is a part-time position.

About the role

Under limited supervision, oversees the day-to-day operation of recycling centers and collection of recyclables at various County offices and the County jail during all seasons and weather conditions; works on special recycling and Support Services Department projects.

Responsibilities

  • Household & Tire Recycling Centers – Oversees day-to-day operations, including but not limited to:
    • Opens and closes the facility as scheduled
    • Provides professional and courteous service
    • Ensures materials are placed in the proper container
    • Schedules requests for container swaps
    • Maintains and cleans office, grounds, bins, and equipment in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations
  • Recyclables Collection – Oversees day-to-day collection of recyclables from various County offices, the County jail, and other assigned locations, including transporting and unloading at the appropriate recycling plant. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    • Operation of a box truck with a lift gate and a pickup truck with a utility trailer
    • Maintaining collection containers in designated areas
    • Following a time-sensitive schedule
    • Ensuring routine vehicle maintenance and cleaning are performed
  • Special Projects – Facilitates promotional and educational opportunities through events such as the County Fair, schools, recreation centers, and civic organizations
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Equivalent of a high school diploma
  • One (1) year of work experience in a direct customer service position
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to drive and maneuver a box truck and a pickup truck with a utility trailer
  • Prior to operating a County-owned vehicle, completion of the HC Defensive Driving course and/or an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) provided at the department level

Skills & Knowledge

  • Knowledge of state and local traffic laws
  • Knowledge of state and federal environmental regulations
  • Knowledge of Hamilton County policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of recycling opportunities and collection methods
  • Skill in reading, understanding, and applying federal/state environmental rules and regulations, as well as Hamilton County Regulations, Policies, and Procedures
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with the public, department staff, other County departments, and contractors
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication

Physical Requirements

  • Work requires moderate physical effort, including intermittent sitting, standing, squatting, use of a ladder or step stool, considerable walking, and lifting
  • Regular lifting and carrying of up to seventy-five (75) pounds

Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice. All positions require regular and punctual in-person attendance, including possible work on holidays, weekends, or extended/irregular hours with short notice.
