Assists and supports active treatment, individualized assessment, and evaluation to restore, remediate, or rehabilitate physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and spiritual functioning for patients with medical, psychiatric, developmental disabilities, substance abuse, sensory impairments, or other disabling conditions. Helps improve functioning and independence in life activities under the direction of a recreational therapist.
Responsibilities
- Assists with individualized assessments to collect data for treatment plans (co-signed by a Certified Rehab Therapist).
- Supports treatment plans and goals with interventions to restore and improve patient function.
- Plans, leads, and engages patients in structured therapeutic groups aligned with treatment goals.
- Counsels and educates patients, ensuring documentation and outcomes are recorded for each group.
- Attends required milieu meetings.
- Assists with evaluating patient progress relative to the treatment plan, reporting changes that may affect interventions.
- Helps develop discharge plans (co-signed by a Certified Rehab Therapist) and collaborates with patients and families for continued treatment.
- Facilitates patient reintegration into the community with recommended resources.
- Ensures patient safety in all groups and maintains accountability for equipment per hospital policy.
- Adheres to infection control and HIPAA compliance.
- Provides professional, empathetic, and culturally appropriate care to patients of diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrates ethical conduct and caring behaviors in all interactions.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- One year of recreation therapy experience in a psychiatric, acute care, or community setting.
- AHA Basic Life Support certification.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
- Ability to work variable shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Flexibility and composure in a constantly changing environment.
- Hospital Fire and Life Safety Card (Los Angeles City Employees only).
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree in related fields (e.g., Art, Music, Dance, Psychology, Sociology, Kinesiology, Theater, Education).
- Two years of experience as a Recreational Therapist in an acute care hospital or community setting.
- Bilingual skills for effective communication with patients and families.
