Position Summary
The City of Fort Lauderdale is hiring energetic part-time Recreation Instructors for its after school programs. Candidates will organize and lead various recreational activities in indoor and/or outdoor settings.
Essential Job Functions
- Maintains order and enforces rules and regulations at recreational facilities
- Maintains safety and health standards at facilities and during programs
- Selects and uses appropriate teaching materials for individual needs
- Sets up and breaks down facilities, programs, and events
- Completes departmental forms
- Instructs programs such as art, dance, sports, fitness, etc.
- Serves as a sports official, scorekeeper, or coach during youth or teen sports
- Serves as a food monitor during summer camp or after school programs (must provide own vehicle)
- Serves as a camp director during camp programs
- Serves as a swim instructor
- Serves as a team lead when necessary
- Works weekends, nights, and holidays
Job Requirements, Preferences & Work Environment
- High school diploma or GED, or be a graduating senior (if 17 years old)
- Must be 18 years old or older (if not a graduating senior)
- If working as a youth or teen sports official, must have 6 months experience in sports instruction or officiating
- If working as a swim instructor, must have a valid American Red Cross CPR for Professional Rescuer and First Aid certificate and AED certification
- Candidates must pass a fingerprinting/background screening process prior to employment
- Licensed after school personnel must complete additional documentation and forms to ensure County and State compliance
- Must complete 45 hours Child Care Training (transcripts required)
- Must undergo local/FDLE background screening
- Must obtain Pediatric CPR/First Aid or within 90 days of employment
- Must complete 24-hour Child Care in-service training annually
Additional Requirements
- Experience working in a licensed after school program is preferred
- Licenses must be obtained within 90 days of employment and paid for by the City
- All required certifications must be kept current to continue employment

This is a part-time temporary non-benefitted position. The selection process varies by position and includes evaluation of training and experience, written tests, interviews, background checks, medical examinations, and drug screens.
