About the role

The City of Carson’s Parks and Recreation Division is seeking (2) passionate and experienced Recreation Specialist – Dance Instructors to support our Enrichment Program. This role is ideal for a dedicated dance professional with experience in tap, ballet, or performing arts who enjoys working with the community and inspiring individuals of all ages through movement and artistic expression.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes and instructs special interest classes or programs.
  • Develops and schedules classes for various age groups.
  • Prepares reports on the status of the special interest class or program as needed.
  • May be assigned duties as a sports official on an urgency basis.

Requirements

  • A degree in Dance, Performing Arts, or a related field is highly desirable.
  • Must be 18 years old and older.
  • Available to meet a commitment of at least two days per week during the fall and spring seasons.

Qualifications

  • Completion of formal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
  • Demonstrable proficiency in an appropriate area of special interest.
  • Knowledge of English usage.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and deal tactfully with the public.

Skills

  • Experience teaching or assisting in a structured dance-based program.
  • Comfortable working with diverse age groups.

  • The City contracts with CalPERS for medical benefits, which offers employees a choice of various HMOs and PPOs. The City shall pay the required monthly minimum of $143.00 towards the monthly health insurance premium.
  • For unit members who have eight (8) years or more of consecutive service with the City and currently working 1,000 hours or more per fiscal year, the City provides an optional benefits package (medical and vision) and, effective May 26, 2016, the City provides an additional $314.00 per month to be used towards these optional benefits for employee and eligible dependents.
  • Sick Leave: Paid sick leave shall accrue at the rate of one (1) hour for each 30 hours worked to a maximum of 24 hours per year. Unit members shall be entitled to use accrued paid sick time beginning on the 90th day of employment, defined as sick leave accrual and usage. Paid sick leave shall be taken in increments of not less than one (1) hour.
  • Holiday Pay: Effective calendar year 2012, unit members will receive five (5) hours of holiday pay for each of the following holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day. For more information please click on the link below.
