About the role
Perform physical and administrative work assisting the Recreation Director in the activities of the Recreation Department.
Responsibilities
- Assist in supervising summer playgrounds, fall soccer, football, basketball leagues, and other seasonal activities.
- Handle receipt, inspection, and issuance of materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Assist in physical inventory of materials, equipment, and supplies; maintain inventory records and prepare reports.
- Assist in preparation of Recreation Department vehicle reports and maintenance schedules.
- Serve as Department Safety Officer and assist in training workers to safely operate and maintain equipment.
- Assist in preparation and maintenance of all athletic, park, and playground areas.
- Operate a backhoe for digging ditches, trenches, back lifts, and tamping.
- Operate a front-end loader to load gravel, sand, and similar materials onto trucks.
- Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and other department machinery.
- Assist in keeping all storage and satellite buildings clean and orderly.
- Participate in maintenance and removal of trees, hedges, and shrubs; maintain outdoor equipment at recreational facilities.
- Participate in cutting grass and weeds, and maintaining recreational parks and facilities.
- Maintain and clean the maintenance building; keep inventory of equipment, tools, and parts.
- Participate in weed eating at all recreational parks and facilities.
- Operate equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, tractors, top dressers, tillers, generators, pressure washers, and other power tools.
- Dig trenches, ditches, and backfill/compact areas; clean out ditches, load and unload materials and equipment.
- Spray larvicides and apply ant poison.
- Distribute grass seed and fertilizer; aerate fields and park areas.
- Pick up trash and empty trash receptacles at recreational facilities.
- Maintain records, prepare reports, and document specialized maintenance of equipment and mechanical tools.
- Participate in construction projects within parks and playgrounds maintained by the department.
- Serve on various employee or other committees as assigned.
- Oversee all Sports Park and City Park maintenance part-time staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Graduation from a community college or two years of college, with major coursework in recreation, golf and sports turf management, or a related field.
- OR graduation from a standard high school and two years of experience in preparation and maintenance of athletic fields or general maintenance.
