RECREATION SERVICES LEADER (Recurrent)

About the Role

We are seeking Recreation Services Leaders to join our team at the Department of Parks and Recreation. You will assist our Recreation Staff with various organized sports, special programs, and classes, working directly with members of the public at our 181 parks throughout Los Angeles County.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates or organizes programs such as arts and crafts, dance, music, and theater arts.
  • Assists in developing and presenting special recreation programs for senior citizens, youths, and people with disabilities.
  • Coordinates park club activities and assists in developing park holiday programs (e.g., Christmas, Easter, Halloween).
  • Plans and coordinates playground and community center athletic activities, including tournaments, leagues, and contests.
  • Monitors the use and care of equipment and facilities at one or more parks.
  • Inspects playground equipment and facilities for safety and proper operation.
  • Maintains safety, cleanliness, and order at park facilities; ensures safety rules are observed.
  • Assists in preparing athletic fields for tournaments and leagues.
  • Assists with routine clerical duties, such as preparing use permits and reports, fee collection, and program scheduling.
  • Assists in handling public complaints.
  • Provides direction to temporary or seasonal staff as needed.

Requirements

  • 240 hours of experience instructing, conducting, or planning recreational programs in arts & crafts, dance, music, or outdoor recreation.
  • OR 100 hours of experience as a Park Aide, NC in the Department of Parks and Recreation.
  • OR Completion of 120 hours of work experience through the Department of Human Resources/Youth@Work Countywide Youth Bridges Program (CYBP) with the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation or Los Angeles County Library. (Applicants must submit a CYBP certificate of completion.)
  • Must be 16 years of age or older at the time of appointment. All minors under 18 must have a work permit.
  • A valid California Class C Driver's License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation for job-related essential functions.

Qualifications

Physical Class 3 - Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching. Involves working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

Skills

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to work with people of all ages.
  • Organizational and coordination skills for programs and activities.

This is a noncompetitive examination intended to qualify applicants. Successful candidates must pass a pre-placement medical examination and provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or request an exemption.
