General Purpose
Recreation Program Instructors create engaging, safe, and inclusive learning experiences for participants of all ages and skill levels. They lead classes, workshops, and activities across a wide range of recreational disciplines, helping individuals develop skills, build confidence, and enjoy meaningful leisure experiences. Instructors serve as positive role models, uphold program standards, and contribute to a welcoming community environment.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Lead structured classes, practices, workshops, or activity sessions in accordance with program goals and organizational standards.
- Provide clear instruction, demonstrations, and feedback tailored to participant needs and skill levels.
- Adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles, abilities, and ages.
- Foster a positive, encouraging, and inclusive atmosphere that supports participant growth and enjoyment.
- Maintain a safe environment by following established safety protocols and monitoring participant behavior.
- Inspect equipment and activity areas before each session, report or address hazards promptly.
- Respond appropriately to injuries, incidents, or emergencies within scope of training.
Program Support & Administration
- Prepare lesson plans, practice plans, or activity outlines as required.
- Track attendance, participant progress, and program outcomes when applicable.
- Assist with program setup, cleanup, and equipment organization.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, participants, and families regarding schedules, expectations, and program updates.
Customer Service & Community Engagement
- Build positive relationships with participants, families, and community members.
- Represent the organization with professionalism, enthusiasm, and integrity.
- Encourage participation, model good sportsmanship, and promote the values of recreation and lifelong learning.
Other Duties And Responsibilities
- Good interpersonal skills are necessary to communicate with parents, staff and the public.
- Perform duties as assigned by supervisor.
Job Qualifications
- Required Education and Experience: Ages 15 and older with previous experience participating and/or instructing/coaching program, workshop or activity.
- Other Necessary Requirements: Instruction & Facilitation, Safety Awareness, Adaptability, Communication, Teamwork, Customer Service, Problem-Solving, Professionalism.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Experience instructing, coaching, or leading activities in a relevant recreation field (sports, arts, fitness, outdoor programs, youth development, etc.).
- Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to motivate and engage participants in a supportive manner.
- Knowledge of safety practices related to the specific activity area.
- Certifications relevant to the program area (e.g., CPR/First Aid, coaching certifications, activity-specific credentials) may be required or preferred.
Physical Activities
- May involve indoor or outdoor settings depending on program type.
- Requires physical activity and the ability to demonstrate skills or assist participants.
- Evening, weekend, or seasonal hours may be required based on program schedules.
- May be required to lift equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Strenuous physical activity may include running, climbing, jumping, stooping, crouching, crawling, pulling and extensively reaching at heights above floor level.
Tools And Equipment Used
- All necessary equipment will be provided by Parks & Recreation.
Supervision Received
- Works under the general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator and/or Recreation Supervisor.
