Recreation Assistant
About the role
This position is assigned to the Recreation Division within the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department at Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC). The role provides program support for the Recreational Lodging Facility at Naval Support Activity Mid-South.
Responsibilities
- Provides customer service, information, and support for Community Recreation programs and activities, including:
- Checking patron eligibility for recreation facilities, resources, and equipment.
- Providing information about activities and program offerings.
- Opening and closing facilities, ordering and restocking supplies.
- Preparing snack bar menu items or prepackaged retail items.
- Collects fees from customers for sales of tickets, retail and rental items, classes, trips, and other programs using Point of Sales (POS) and computer programs.
- Ensures accuracy of daily sales transactions and completes a Daily Activity Report (DAR) at the end of every shift.
- Assists in processing customer Internet registrations (e.g., Net Near You), initial log-ins, and event registrations.
- Checks Community Recreation equipment and resources in and out, collects rental fees, inventories items, and inspects them upon return. Notifies supervisor if damage or loss occurs.
- Ensures all rental or check-out forms are properly completed and reservation procedures are followed.
- Conducts inventory, maintains inventory controls, and ensures proper accountability of program equipment and resources.
- Assists in administering traditional and non-traditional workshops, clinics, and events in leisure and recreation skills (e.g., camping, cycling, sailing, backpacking, skiing, hiking, water sports).
- Provides recreation experiences through day and weekend trips related to leisure skill sets.
- Assists in day-to-day administration of assigned programs, including submission of event after-action reports, patronage data collection, and entering program data.
Requirements
- Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successfully complete a background investigation, including fingerprint identification.
- Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check; discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
- Must complete Personal Identity Verification (PIV) using two forms of identification from the Form I-9.
- A valid State driver’s license is required to operate motor vehicles.
- Salary must be sent via Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer to a financial institution of your choice.
- Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- Must be willing and able to work a flexible work schedule (0–40 hours per week), including early shifts, late shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Must obtain the following certifications within 90 days of hire:
- C.A.R.E (Controlling Alcohol Risks Effectively) training.
- Emergency First Responder (EFR) or CPR First Aid certification.
- Current Food Handler certification.
- Must obtain and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid Certification within 30 days of hire.
- For positions requiring travel more than twice per year, must obtain and maintain a Government-issued Travel Card.

- Combination of experience related to customer service and/or recreation activity-based functions.
- Ability to organize, plan, and administer special events and entertainment activities.
- Must work independently, make sound decisions, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of the goals, principles, techniques, and procedures used in organizing, planning, and conducting leisure time activities.
- Knowledge of the Navy MWR mission and the scope of Community Recreation activities, including suitability for individuals, groups, ages, and interests.
- Knowledge of the functions, procedures, and operations of recreation activities.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Ability to maintain records, compile and organize data for reports, and perform research on recreation topics for customer dissemination.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Knowledge of computers, office procedures, and print production.
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part-time work. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).
Education
Applicants can qualify based on education, experience, or a combination of both. If qualifying based on education, applicants must submit transcripts showing degree awards and coursework.
- 6 months or more of general experience and 6 months or more of specialized experience.
- Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts).
- An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Additional Information
- Position is non-critical, sensitive, requiring access to IT II systems and/or Personally Identifiable Information (PII). An Access National Agency Check Investigation (ANACI) is required via the SF 86 security form.
