About the Role

Under general supervision of the director of activities, performs a variety of duties involved in carrying out recreational programs in assigned areas. Assess resident needs; follow through on plan of care and carry out therapeutic programs.

Responsibilities

• Assess resident needs and follow through on plan of care.
• Carry out therapeutic recreational programs.
• Demonstrate knowledge of all equipment and supplies utilized in the recreation department.
• Work with state and federal regulations.
• Make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such actions.
• Deal tactfully with personnel, residents, and family members.
• Recognize and describe persons associated with nursing home safety and security.
• Communicate with medical staff and nursing personnel.
• Work beyond normal working hours and on weekends, holidays when necessary.
• Assist in the evacuation of residents if needed.
• Follow all facility policies and procedures, including timeliness, attendance, confidentiality, and professionalism.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• Two years’ experience in long-term care or health care institute preferred.
• Knowledge of state and federal regulations.
• Ability to read, speak, write, and understand the English language.
• Computer proficiency.
• Ability to make independent decisions.
• Patient, tactful, and cheerful disposition with enthusiasm.
• Commitment to continuing professional development.
• Must be able to lift, pull, push, and move a minimum of fifty pounds.
• Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents.
• Must be in general good health.

Working Conditions

• Works in office areas as well as throughout the nursing service area (e.g., medication rooms, resident’s rooms).
• Sits, stands, bends, lifts, and moves intermittently during working hours.
• Subject to frequent interruptions.
• Involved with residents, personnel, visitors, and government agencies under all conditions/circumstances.
• Subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and visitors.
• Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends, holidays when necessary.
• Subject to falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the workday.
• Subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, including AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.

Physical and Sensory Requirements

• Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
• Must be able to hear and see or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function.
• Must be able to lift, pull, push, and move a minimum of fifty pounds.
• Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents.

Additional Information

• Employee will receive in-service education for all mandatory topics upon hire and at least annually thereafter.
• The facility Administrator and/or designee will conduct observations, evaluations, and competencies to ensure compliance.
• Attire is expected to be neat, hygienic, and professional. Unless otherwise approved, scrubs should not be worn.
