About the role
The Lead Shipping & Receiving Clerk leads a team of clerks in daily receiving and shipping operations while ensuring accuracy of entries and actively participating in goods handling.
Responsibilities
- Receiving:
- Coordinate receipt of incoming raw materials and indirect supplies (RMO), reject damaged items, record shortages, and correspond with shippers to resolve issues.
- Monitor, count, weigh, or measure incoming/outgoing shipments to verify accuracy against bills of lading, invoices, or orders.
- Participate in goods receiving while managing lead responsibilities.
- Control RMC’s and update releases for final material labeling.
- Execute vendor returns within the ERP system.
- Collaborate with Finance to address receiving/invoicing discrepancies.
- Provide first-level support for receiving issues or constraints.
- Maintain error/issue reporting and support KPI publishing.
- Shipping:
- Determine shipment methods for small packages and palletized freight (FedEx, freight carriers).
- Schedule freight pickups and ensure outgoing shipments meet specifications (wrapping, palletizing, crating).
- Create shipping documents and communicate tracking information to stakeholders.
- Ensure proper packaging and labeling of shipments.
- Waste Stream/Recycling:
- Schedule dumpster/compactor pickups and maintain the Pickup Log.
- Maintain RCRA certification and label chemical waste for pickups.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for scrap activity control.
- Manage scrap vendor scale/weight tickets, packing slips, and related documents.
- Submit scrap tickets and maintain accurate waste manifests.
- General:
- Comply with plant safety procedures and promote a safe working environment.
- Maintain 5S standards for the office and main (west) dock areas.
- Operate material handling equipment (lift trucks, pallet jacks, carts, hand trucks) to move materials.
- Maintain inventory of shipping supplies and complete necessary reports.
- Support continuous improvement activities in Supply Chain and Production to reduce bottlenecks.
Expected Results: Ensure accurate records and timely inventory postings, provide tactical direction for the clerk team, resolve or escalate administrative issues, and comply with company policies.
Requirements
- 3–5 years of experience in receiving/shipping or accounts payable teams, preferably in manufacturing.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior leadership experience (senior role, team lead, or supervisor) preferred.
- Forklift experience required; willingness to learn additional equipment.
- Ability to handle physical heavy lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Position requires standing/walking (30%), operating material handling equipment (20%), and sitting at a desk (50%).
- Must be able to work overtime (weekends, nights, holidays) as needed, including rotating Saturday coverage.
Skills
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Experience with SAP MM, SD, and LE modules or similar ERP systems (Oracle, JDE).
- Experience with Ariba ordering/receiving system.
- Clear and concise communication with employees and vendors.
