About the role

This job description outlines the nature of production work routinely performed by production employees at the Smithfield plant. It is designed to help individuals unfamiliar with food processing understand the requirements of this type of work. Production employees perform a variety of tasks involving manual material handling and the use of hand tools, knives, machinery, and equipment. The work is physically demanding and may require the use of multiple body parts and muscle groups. Good hand-eye coordination and upper extremity motor skills are essential for most job tasks.

Responsibilities

• Move finished product from production lines to storage cooler.
• Maintain computer inventory of finished product with SAP system.
• Set down combos of bellies in slab storage.
• Unload incoming trailers of supplies and materials.
• Load out trailers of finished product.
• Operate lift trucks in a safe and efficient manner.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Continuous standing in one location for long periods (up to 2-3 hours before break). Many jobs have fixed workstation locations and are conveyor line paced.
• Walking long distances, sometimes on wet, uneven, and slippery surfaces.
• Climbing or moving on ladders, steps, stairwells, walkways, and platforms.
• Carrying, lifting, lowering, pushing, and pulling heavy and/or awkward objects or loads (up to 50 lbs).
• Pushing or pulling heavy roller carts, bins, or transport containers.
• Working in cold environments (20-45°F), hot environments (exceeding 100°F), and frequent contact with animal fats.
• Wearing, using, and maintaining personal protective equipment.
• Using, cleaning, maintaining, and safely handling sharp cutting tools.
• Frequent static and/or awkward work postures with neck and spine flexion while grasping, pinching, pulling, lifting, extending, and flexing the hands and arms.
• Using and maintaining a variety of knives, hand tools, powered tools, equipment, electrical devices, controls, and motorized vehicles.
• Understanding and following oral and written instructions from supervisors and designated staff.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Competitive starting pay of $22.15/hour.
