Real Estate Controller

We are seeking a hands‑on Real Estate Controller to lead accounting for a diverse portfolio of residential and commercial properties across multiple markets. This role will oversee financial reporting, AP/AR, general ledger, cash flow, budgeting, property and construction accounting while partnering closely with ownership and senior leadership on financial decisions. The ideal candidate is an experienced real estate accounting professional who understands the numbers and the properties behind them, is comfortable digging into financials, visiting properties when needed, leading a team, and ensuring accounting accurately reflects portfolio activity.

Responsibilities

• Lead the accounting function for a portfolio of residential and commercial real‑estate properties.
• Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, cash flow, reconciliations, and month‑end close.
• Prepare and review financial statements, management reports, budgets, forecasts, and financial analyses.
• Manage property and construction accounting, including rent, leases, construction costs, and lender draws.
• Oversee bank accounts, payments, cash management, and investor distributions.
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax requirements, and lender reporting requirements.
• Partner with auditors, tax advisors, lenders, property management, ownership, and senior leadership.
• Lead, train, and develop accounting and bookkeeping team members.
• Visit properties as needed to understand operations and validate that financial results align with activity at the property level.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
• 7+ years of accounting experience.
• 3–4+ years of commercial real‑estate accounting experience within property management or development.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, real‑estate taxes, partnerships, joint ventures, and investment accounting.
• Advanced Excel skills.
• Hands‑on leadership style with the ability to manage both strategic and day‑to‑day accounting responsibilities.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to connect property operations to financial performance.

Pay

Salary Range: $155,000 – $255,000 per year, depending on experience.
