About the role

The Saint Charles Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a full-time Ranger Sergeant to supervise and assist in administering park patrol, outdoor education, investigations, and traffic regulation activities under the direction of the Chief Park Ranger.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol park grounds and facilities to protect patrons and facilities; promote outdoor education and regulate traffic flow.
  • Provide assistance and direction to park patrons.
  • Investigate suspicious activity and direct traffic to ensure safety.
  • Issue traffic and ordinance citation notices; apprehend and arrest criminal violators.
  • Coordinate patrol activities with law enforcement, City departments, and emergency response personnel.
  • Assist the Chief Park Ranger in developing park patrol policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Develop and implement public relations programs and materials.
  • Assist in preparation and administration of the Ranger Division budget, including expenditures, supplies, and staffing levels.
  • Supervise Park Ranger employees, including hiring, scheduling, evaluating, and planning in-service training.
  • Review work of assigned personnel to ensure compliance with department policies; review and approve case reports.
  • Evaluate Rangers requiring independent decision-making and actions affecting the public.
  • Assist in planning and administration of risk management/safety programs.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise special events.
  • Perform duties of Chief Park Ranger in his/her absence or as directed.
  • Prepare incident/accident reports and testify in court as needed.
  • Work all shift hours, including rotating shifts and all weather conditions for prolonged periods.
  • Assist Police Department and other outside agencies as necessary.
  • Ensure duties conform with Federal, State, County, and City laws, ordinances, and departmental rules.
  • Consult with officers, City Attorney, County Prosecutor's Office, and others to ensure effective prosecution of cases.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Certified peace officer by State of Missouri Department of Public Safety (POST Certified).
  • 3 to 5 years full-time supervisory experience in Law Enforcement preferred.
  • Ability to obtain a valid driver's license without suspension or revocation in any state by date of hire.
  • U.S. Citizenship as required by section 590.030 of RSMo.
  • Minimum 21 years of age at the time of employment.
  • First Aid/CPR certification required.
  • State CEU: 48 hours every 3 years; Department CEU: 16 CEU a year for skill development.
  • Regis and MULES Certification required within 6 months.

Physical and Mental Abilities

  • Ability to analyze data and information to determine consequences and identify alternatives.
  • Ability to classify, compute, tabulate, and categorize data; counsel, mediate, and supervise.
  • Ability to persuade, train, and advise on policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with park users, motorists, personnel, and the public.
  • Ability to calculate percentages, fractions, volumes, ratios, and spatial relationships.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles, firearms, restraint devices, baton, computer terminal, two-way radio, and telephone.
  • Ability to exert moderate physical effort involving climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
  • Ability to work in unsafe conditions with exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations, violence, traffic hazards, disease, and toxic agents.

Pay

$71,622.41 – $100,271.39 annually.

Schedule

Full-time; may include rotating shifts and all weather conditions for prolonged periods.
