Railcar Repairman (Carman) - Richmond, CA

About the Role

Repairs, modifies, and upgrades rail cars. Rebuilds car components such as bolsters, side framers, hitch heads, and box car doors. Performs welding (up to 30% of time), fabrication, and cutting torch operations. Engages in mechanical labor (95% of time) to repair and maintain railcars according to blueprints and specifications using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments.

Inspects machines and equipment to locate causes of trouble through visual, tactile, and specialized knowledge. Operates forklifts to move, align, and set parts. Measures, cuts, and threads pipes, replacing air lines with hand tools. Assembles subassemblies, major components, and equipment, testing for proper operation. Repairs broken parts using hand tools and welding equipment. Records car repair information via an electronic keyboard system.

Responsibilities

• Perform repairs, modifications, and upgrades on rail cars.
• Rebuild car components: bolsters, side framers, hitch heads, and box car doors.
• Weld, fabricate, and use cutting torches.
• Inspect and maintain railcars using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments.
• Operate forklifts to move and align parts.
• Measure, cut, and thread pipes; replace air lines.
• Assemble subassemblies and major components, testing for proper operation.
• Repair broken parts using hand tools and welding equipment.
• Enter car repair information into an electronic system.
• Maintain a clean work environment.
• Set up and operate metalworking tools such as welders or grinders.
• Adhere to specified time standards and customer requirements (AAR, FMO, FRA, TTX, etc.).
• Comply with all work rules and safety regulations.

• Ability to work at heights and around moving machinery.
• Must be available for a flexible schedule, including shift work, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Must complete a mandatory 4-week training program after hire.

Physical Requirements

• Standing, hearing, and seeing for 8 to 10 hours per day.
• Handling for 6 hours; walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and fingering for 5 hours.
• Reaching below waist, twisting, and feeling for 2 hours.
• Sitting, climbing, balancing, crawling, reaching overhead, and talking for 1 hour or less.
• Frequent standing, kneeling, stretching, reaching, gripping tools or objects, and bending at the waist.
• Regular walking, crouching, and twisting while standing.
• Occasional sitting, crawling, and twisting while sitting.
• Lifting car parts from 1-80 lbs. throughout the day (10-25 lbs. frequently; 25-50 lbs. regularly; over 50 lbs. occasionally).
• Pulling 10-25 lbs. frequently; 25-50 lbs. regularly; over 50 lbs. occasionally.
• Carrying 50-75 lbs.
• Using wrenches weighing up to 10 lbs. to tighten bolts (occasionally, up to 4 hours).

• Exposure to welding and burning fumes, odors, dust, gases, and uncomfortable noises for 10 hours per day.
• Regular work in hot temperatures and occasional work in cold temperatures.
• Occasional driving of automotive equipment.
• Regular work with oil, grease, and vibrations.
• Occasional work alone.
• Hazard exposure from mechanical tools, electrical welders, and radiant energy from torches (10 hours/day).

Schedule

8 to 10 hour shifts; work hours and rest days may change regularly. Must be available for a flexible schedule, including shift work, nights, weekends, and holidays. Mandatory 4-week training program after hire.
