About the role

We are one of the largest U.S. railroads transporting essential products and materials across 28 western states and 3 Canadian provinces. As a member of our team, you will play a crucial role in supporting the movement of these vital goods.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect railcar frames, bodies, safety appliances, and wheels for holes, cracks, and other defects.
  • Maintain, replace, inspect, and repair air brake components.
  • Operate electrical and gas welding equipment and acetylene/MAPP torches.
  • Operate specialized off-highway motor vehicles (forklifts, mobile cranes, track mobiles, and UTVs).
  • Work in a safety-sensitive environment with diverse and extreme weather conditions, uneven surfaces, loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Requirements

  • Able to work now and in the future without BNSF’s assistance in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization.
  • At least 18 years of age or will be by the start date listed above.
  • Able to work the assigned shift/hours.
  • Able to read, write, and communicate (speak, hear, and understand) English.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs without assistance.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Able to visually distinguish colors and differentiate between verbal and non-verbal sounds.
  • Able to use hands and use hand tools to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning, and pulling.
  • Able to climb ladders and get on/off equipment.
  • Able to occasionally work from various heights including making repairs on top of railcars.
  • Able to bend, walk, stand, and sit occasionally with breaks.
  • Follow safety policies and procedures; wear the required personal protective equipment.

Qualifications

  • Union membership is with the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen and union dues are required per union agreement.

Skills

  • Welding and cutting skills.
  • Knowledge of railcar maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, safety-sensitive environment.

Pay

The pay rate ranges from $37.11-$44.18/hr with an annual salary range of $71,531.20-$85,155.20 with 3-5 years seniority.

Schedule

This is a full-time position (40 hrs/wk) and is subject to seniority and governed by union agreement. Assigned shift may be one of three 8-hour shifts. Mechanical shops operate 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.
