Rail Crew Lead

Assists in the supervision of the rail team, ensuring operations comply with WIN’s compliance, safety, and operational policies and procedures. Provides direction to the rail team to guarantee timely, safe, and regulation-compliant rail operations. Offers solutions to daily operational issues and identifies areas of concern to act proactively. Dedicated to team and company success through positive leadership and coaching. Reports to the Rail Supervisor and assists with additional activities as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates the safe operation of Rail equipment in compliance with company operating safety policies and procedures.
  • Conducts routine Rail equipment and track inspections and preventative maintenance on rail equipment, rail track and components, rail scale operation; maintains accurate records.
  • Follows the company's reporting policies and serves as the dedicated "first contact" in the event of an accident or injury in the field.
  • Executes the "Stop Work" authority, ensuring all safety and compliance steps are followed.
  • Moves and positions Rail Cars using railcar moving equipment.
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of day-to-day operations and trains peers on specific tasks.
  • Provides positive guidance and coaching to other Rail personnel throughout the day.
  • Follows standard operating procedures for operating and maintaining Rail equipment.
  • Explains and demonstrates operating procedures to new or less experienced operators with a clear understanding of Rail safety policies/rules.
  • Creates and maintains communication lines between the Rail Supervisor and front-line employees to ensure clear messaging and issue escalation.
  • Completes Rail safe training and Industrial track inspection training annually, along with any other required monthly/yearly training.
  • Maintains a positive work environment by fostering cooperation with customers, clients, vendors, co-workers, and management.
  • Performs daily tasks including:
    • Maintaining switches, rail joints, crossings, derailers, and clearance points.
    • Overseeing the railyard, including picking litter, walking conditions, cleaning waterways, and maintaining litter fences.
    • Maintaining parts storage areas.
    • Assisting with locomotive maintenance.
    • Inspecting and maintaining the dust suppression system for the transfer building daily.
    • Completing rail car inventory accurately and timely.
    • Performing daily rail car inspections.
    • Maintaining signage in and around the rail yard/transfer building.
    • Ensuring tracks are passable for CUOH daily.
    • Ensuring proper switch alignment and clearance before any movement on the tracks.
    • Ensuring Rail safe communications and rules are followed.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills and Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • 3 years of experience working with rail, landfill, or waste operations.
  • Ability to pass Rail Safe training during the first 90 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s and/or Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Prior leadership experience within the industry.

Physical Demands

  • Handle tools and equipment requiring fine motor skills.
  • Reach with hands and arms.
  • Climb and walk on heights often greater than 4 feet.
  • Ascend and descend stairs and stationary vertical ladders as part of normal work activity and emergency egress situations.
  • Lift moderate to heavy material (up to 50 lbs).
  • Move about all areas of the plant, including catwalks, deck grating, wet and muddy areas, and uneven surfaces.
  • Operate equipment including industrial forklifts, manlifts, skid steer type loaders, and other equipment.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to unusual conditions or situations.
  • Work in all weather conditions.
