Radiology Tech Assistant

About the role

Under the general supervision of the Lead Technologist or Manager Medical Imaging, you will transport patients requiring radiographic procedures, work directly with imaging technologists and radiologists to facilitate and help assure high-quality imaging services to patients, and exercise critical thinking to prioritize workload and patient management situations. You will collaborate with Diagnostic Imaging Technologists and others to improve operational efficiencies while role-modeling Brown University Health’s values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence.

Responsibilities

• Act in accordance with Brown University Health’s Corporate Compliance Program and Code of Conduct, incorporating CARE values (compassion, accountability, respect, excellence).
• Foster patient- and family-centered care across all developmental stages and cultural patterns.
• Maintain quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control per hospital and department policies.
• Prepare imaging rooms, equipment, and supplies for diagnostic procedures, including positioning kits and trays.
• Prepare contrast material within the limits of formal training and department procedures.
• Assist technologists and radiologists during procedures, manage patients, and observe radiation safety rules.
• Remain in the room during fluoroscopy and minor interventional procedures to provide supplies as requested.
• Package and label lab specimens with proper patient information.
• Clean rooms and equipment after exams.
• Review medical information in charts and departmental documents while observing patient privacy policies.
• Process information in PACS, LifeChart, and other applications (e.g., reviewing exam worklists, supporting downtime procedures).
• Greet and escort patients from waiting areas, explain procedures, and address questions or concerns.
• Identify and assist patients prior to procedures, adhering to the Patient Identification Policy.
• Prepare patients for transport by dressing, lifting, and positioning them in chairs or stretchers.
• Transport patients to and from Diagnostic Imaging with supervisor approval, collaborating with nursing units to streamline processes.
• Assist with portable radiographic exams and patient positioning as needed.
• Secure transport equipment (e.g., stretchers, wheelchairs, IV poles) and prepare patients for imaging procedures.
• Clean and prepare equipment before and after use, including changing linens and sanitizing tables.
• Provide and review patient screening forms and information sheets.
• Observe patients awaiting testing and report adverse reactions or unusual behaviors immediately.
• Maintain stock levels of supplies, perform daily inventory, and store items with attention to expiration dates.
• Order, receive, and unpack supplies, verifying contents and reporting damaged items.
• Stock rooms with laundry and supplies, maintaining cleanliness and order.
• Pick up and deliver supplies, linen, contrast material, and stock requests as needed.
• Report equipment repairs (e.g., stretchers, wheelchairs) per hospital policy.
• Assist patients with toileting, providing bedpans/urinals and following disposal protocols.
• Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of imaging rooms, changing rooms, and equipment.
• Observe safety and isolation precautions for infectious patients.
• Practice ALARA principles of radiation protection, including dosimeter use.
• Complete required hospital training and perform other duties (e.g., assisting with clerical tasks, data entry, deliveries).

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of a Tech Assistant training program or previous experience as a Tech Assistant/Aide; clinical background or enrollment in a healthcare track program may substitute if training is unavailable.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Numerical and analytical skills to prepare contrast media and follow quantitative procedures.
• Manual dexterity to operate equipment within scope of responsibilities.
• Knowledge of radiation safety and the department’s ALARA program.
• Demonstrated age-specific competencies to care for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English, including basic arithmetic.
• Critical thinking skills to support optimal patient care.
• Interpersonal skills to exchange information and support satisfactory outcomes.

Work Environment

• Exposure to ionizing radiation and contagious diseases (minimized with safety protocols).
• Regular interaction with acutely ill patients.
• Frequent standing, walking, lifting, carrying, and handling of imaging equipment.
• Handling of flammable or controlled substances with care.

Pay

$21.33–$22.27 per hour.

Schedule

3:00 PM – 11:30 PM, Wednesday and Thursday, with every other weekend required.
