About the role
The Radiology Practitioner Assistant (RPA) or Registered Radiologist Assistant (RRA) provides primary health care services in medical imaging with physician supervision. This role involves exercising autonomy in decision-making regarding patient assessment, management, and a variety of radiology diagnostic and interventional services.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate the day’s schedule of procedures with the supervising physician and imaging staff.
- Review medical images and preliminary reports with a supervising physician, preparing technical reports for review and signature.
- Evaluate the physiologic and psychological responsiveness of each patient.
- Participate in patient management, following up with the supervising physician.
- Under the guidance, supervision*, and discretion of the supervising physician, perform procedures such as pneumocentesis, thoracentesis, abscess drainage, paracentesis, lymph node biopsy, thyroid biopsy, bone biopsy, lumbar puncture, arthrograms, joint injections, PICC line placement, chest tube placement, central line placement, indirect cystogram, VCUG, nephrostogram, loopogram, hysterosalpingogram, modified rehab swallow, esophagrams, upper GI & lower GI studies, small bowel follow through, port injections, port removals, removal tunneled catheters, general order placement, pre-procedure notes, history and physical.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an educational program recognized by the CBRPA or ARRT (RRA).
- Validation of participation in continuing education activities with a minimum of 50 hours of continuing education credits in each biannual period.
- Maintenance of an active radiographer registration status.
- Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) skills.
- Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) skills.
- Certified by the CBRPA or considered eligible for the CBRPA certification examination, or certified by the ARRT or considered eligible for the RRA certification examination.
