Position Summary

Radiological Control Technicians at N3B provide critical radiological support to the N3B mission operations by ensuring radiological safety for workers and the public. As an employee of the N3B’s Radiation Protection Division, you will be qualified and use your experience to perform workplace surveillance of radiological conditions by conducting monitoring and surveys for removable and fixed contamination and external radiation surveys for beta/gamma and neutron radiation; perform routine and non-routine radiation protection activities to ensure the implementation of and compliance with procedures, including response to abnormal events; perform air sampling and operation of air monitoring equipment; participate in planning of low-, moderate-, and high-hazard work; and provide mentoring to junior radiological control technicians and students and on-the-job training on procedures.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provide routine radiation monitoring support for assigned locations.
  • Provides radiological support for routine activities to ensure compliance with specified procedures, including 10 CFR 835 requirements.
  • Mentor junior technicians in proper application of radiological protection techniques.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation and reports of monitoring and surveillance activities.
  • Implement radiation protection procedures to a wide range of activities and functions.
  • Implement radiation work permits for various tasks.
  • Respond to radiological emergency situations.
  • Must be able to drive and be insurable to operate government vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to perform high-hazard, complex radiological work including working knowledge of the basis and use of engineered controls (e.g., localized ventilation, temporary shielding, and containment devices).
  • Developed experience and technical working knowledge in radiation protection principles and practices.
  • Developed experience in radiation monitoring, personnel exposure control and other operational health physics activities.
  • Working knowledge of applicable Department of Energy (DOE) and/or Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) orders and regulations.
  • Fully proficient experience in the use of protective clothing and respiratory protective equipment for radiological hazards.
  • Developed experience in coordination of multiple complex activities, including high-hazard radiological work, while ensuring that radiation protection priorities and requirements are fully implemented.
  • Fully proficient experience in managing competing demands in highly dynamic conditions.
  • Outstanding record-keeping, documentation, and organization skills.
  • Ability and desire to assume ownership and responsibility for multiple simultaneous activities, including giving clear and concise direction to others, including peers, customers, etc.
  • Active Department of Energy Q security clearance, desired.

Education And Experience Required

  • A high school diploma and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Desirable additional training, certification, and/or education, including associate’s degrees and graduation from technical institutions.

Working Conditions And Physical Requirements

  • Work will be performed in a complex environment involving radiological control and security areas.
  • Work will be performed both inside and outside of buildings in varying weather conditions.
  • Subject to adverse weather conditions, hot and cold, and anywhere from dry and dusty to wet and muddy.

Safety, Security, and Quality

  • While working to achieve N3B LLCC objectives, the Radiological Control Technician will ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner to include protecting the confidentiality and integrity of Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
  • This role will maintain required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; and make safety, security and quality an integral part of every task; including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.

Note: A Department of Energy active Q security clearance is required [BDM2] [DS3] for this position.
