Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B) manages the 10-year, $2.1 billion Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract for the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management, Los Alamos Field Office. N3B is a limited liability company owned by HII Nuclear Inc. and BWX Technologies, joined by critical subcontractors Longenecker and Associates and Tech2 Solutions.

This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Los Alamos is a tight-knit mountain community that consistently ranks as one of Livability.com’s Best Small Towns in America. This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates can successfully perform the job requirements.
About the Role
Radiological Control Technicians at N3B provide critical radiological support to mission operations by ensuring radiological safety for workers and the public. As part of the Radiation Protection Division, you will perform workplace surveillance of radiological conditions, conduct monitoring and surveys for contamination and radiation, perform routine and non-routine radiation protection activities, respond to abnormal events, operate air monitoring equipment, and participate in planning low-, moderate-, and high-hazard work. You will also mentor junior technicians and provide on-the-job training on procedures.
At this level, you will independently perform radiological control duties for high-hazard work, recommend controls to supervision, and ensure correct application of radiological controls. You will coordinate with supervision to resolve issues and ensure appropriate resource allocation.
Responsibilities
- Provide routine radiation monitoring support for assigned locations.
- Ensure compliance with specified procedures, including 10 CFR 835 requirements.
- Mentor junior technicians in proper application of radiological protection techniques.
- Prepare and maintain documentation and reports of monitoring and surveillance activities.
- Implement radiation protection procedures for a wide range of activities and functions.
- Implement radiation work permits for various tasks.
- Respond to radiological emergency situations.
- Operate government vehicles (must be insurable to drive).
Requirements
- Ability to perform high-hazard, complex radiological work, including working knowledge of engineered controls (e.g., localized ventilation, temporary shielding, and containment devices).
- Technical working knowledge of radiation protection principles and practices.
- Experience in radiation monitoring, personnel exposure control, and operational health physics activities.
- Working knowledge of applicable Department of Energy (DOE) and/or Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) orders and regulations.
- Proficiency in the use of protective clothing and respiratory protective equipment for radiological hazards.
- Ability to manage competing demands in highly dynamic conditions.
- Experience coordinating multiple complex activities, including high-hazard radiological work, while ensuring radiation protection priorities are implemented.
- Strong record-keeping, documentation, and organizational skills.
- Ability to assume ownership of multiple simultaneous activities and provide clear direction to peers and customers.
An active Department of Energy Q security clearance is desired.
Qualifications
Level 2: High school diploma and a minimum of 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Per DOE O 426.2, this position requires one year of job-related experience. Additional training, certification, and/or education (e.g., associate’s degrees, technical institution graduation) are desirable.
Level 3: High school diploma and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Working Conditions
- Work is performed in a complex environment involving radiological control and security areas.
- Work is conducted both inside and outside of buildings in varying weather conditions (hot, cold, dry, dusty, wet, or muddy).
- Adherence to safety, security, and quality standards is required, including protecting Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
- Maintain required safety, security, and operational training; ensure procedural and regulatory compliance.
