Radiologic Technologist - Fairfield County

About the role

This is a dual role that requires flexibility and knowledge of both Radiology and Medical Assisting. The position is accountable to the Practice Manager, with a dotted-line clinical supervisory link to the Diagnostic Radiology Lead Technologist, Assistant Manager of Radiology, and Manager. Due to the infrequent volume of radiology tasks, the expectation is 20% radiology and 80% medical assisting, with potential for future growth in the radiology portion.

Responsibilities

Radiology Technician

• Assess imaging orders for completeness, accuracy, and appropriateness.
• Involve patient, parent, and caregiver in care and exam/procedure, demonstrating age-related competency and cultural sensitivity.
• Introduce self and role, explain procedures thoroughly, and encourage questions.
• Perform radiologic exams/procedures, ensuring diagnostic quality images.
• Provide support and effective communication to other members of the department and healthcare team.
• Consult with physicians, RNs, and other technologists to provide quality imaging services.
• Adhere to a culture of safety, including handwashing and equipment sanitization.
• Ensure timeliness and accuracy when performing requested exams per protocol.
• Notify appropriate ordering provider of recommended changes to ordered exams.
• Provide support to other modalities within the department as required.
• Perform diagnostic exams for all areas supported by the Radiology department, including ED, OR, onsite, and off-site locations.
• Ensure all images include appropriate patient demographics, positioning, technique, and laterality markers.
• Minimize radiation dose in accordance with ALARA principles, appropriately shielding patients.
• Educate and mentor radiologic skills of new technologists and students, evaluating clinical and technical proficiency.
• Utilize information technology systems associated with the role, ensuring images and documentation are complete and accurate in the patient medical record.
• Adhere to all hospital and department policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols.
• Coordinate equipment service as required.
• May be called upon to cover nights, evenings, weekdays, weekends, and holidays, rotating shifts and scheduled on-call responsibilities.
• Demonstrate support for the mission, values, and goals of the organization through behaviors consistent with organizational standards.
• Practice within the scope of the state of CT Radiologic license and ARRT (R) certification.

Medical Assistant

• Administrative Support:
  • Support patient check-in and check-out processes.
  • Schedule and coordinate patient appointments.
  • Answer and direct calls.
  • Process pre-authorizations and pre-certifications.
  • Prepare and file medical records.
  • Provide cross-coverage for other administrative roles.
  • Maintain clinical files according to organization/department protocol.
  • Process patient-related correspondence.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
• Clinical Support:
  • Ensure efficient patient flow.
  • Prepare treatment rooms and equipment for patient examinations.
  • Provide procedural support following department-specific guidelines.
  • Perform initial patient intake, including interviewing for chief complaint, vital signs, and allergy information.
  • Accurately record and update relevant patient information.
  • Perform daily Quality Controls (QC) for all Point of Care (POC) testing.
  • Obtain specimens, perform and record POC testing per policy.
  • Under provider/RN direction, track and retrieve patient lab/diagnostic testing results.
  • Perform administrative functions of the patient prescription renewal process per policy.
  • Provide cross-coverage for other appropriate clinical roles.
• Departmental Support:
  • Provide support for departmental medical record audits.
  • Clean and stock patient care rooms between patients.
  • Maintain appropriate inventories of medical supplies.
  • Stock and maintain patient-related forms and educational materials.
  • Utilize equipment appropriately and report breakdowns or damage to the Practice Manager.
• Documentation:
  • Ensure documentation is legible and within the appropriate MA scope/organizational guidelines.
  • Accurately document patient information on appropriate forms.
  • Demonstrate accuracy in basic data entry and retrieval of paper/electronic patient records.
• Perform other duties as assigned to promote the health, safety, and comfort of patients and families.
• Demonstrate knowledge of age-related differences and needs of patients from neonate through adolescence.
• Demonstrate cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families.
• Demonstrate awareness of safety needs, medical terminology, infection control, risk management, and environment of care policies.
• Ask questions and seek clarification or assistance when needed, especially in situations outside the MA scope of practice.
• Demonstrate support for the mission, vision, values, and goals of the organization.
• Travel to satellite locations may be required.

Requirements

• Graduate of a Radiologic Technologist program accredited by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
• Completion of a medical assistant training program accredited by an approved body (preferred); if no formal training, certification as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) is preferred. Alternatively, completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant training program is acceptable.
• Registered as a Radiologic Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT (R)) in good standing. New graduates have up to 90 days to obtain ARRT(R) certification with documentation of program completion.
• Current State of Connecticut Radiographer License. New graduates have 90 days to obtain this license according to Connecticut Statutes 20-74bb(f).
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire and maintained thereafter.
