RADIOGRAPHER I (TEMP)

About the Role

Utilizes ionizing radiation to create diagnostic imaging radiographs of designated anatomical areas in accordance with established practices and procedures for all age groups. Obtains patient history, explains routine procedures, and addresses patient concerns. Provides appropriate patient care following the Radiology Gold Service Excellence guidelines to achieve successful completion of procedures. Exercises professional judgment in performance following the Code of Conduct of the ARRT. Contributes as a team member to enhance job stewardship, mindful of internal and external customer service standards.

Responsibilities

• Performs diagnostic images, corroborating the patient's clinical history with the procedure to ensure information is documented and the exam is ordered following patient identification guidelines.
• Utilizes proper radiation protection devices and immobilization techniques for specific age populations following Radiation Safety protocols for the patient and self.
• Properly positions the patient for proper anatomic demonstration while respecting the patient's condition and abilities.
• Utilizes radiographic equipment following proper protocols to provide diagnostic high-quality images for interpretation, understanding the pediatric population and the need for low-dose imaging.
• Assists the Radiologist in a fluoroscopy suite following fluoroscopy guidelines and proper designated use of contrast media.
• Operates portable C-arm equipment in the operating room, providing images as directed by the surgeon.
• Applies guest relation skills following the Patient and Families First Principles.
• Works consistently as a team member, assisting across modalities when needed.
• Follows infection control practices utilizing aseptic techniques, observing universal precautions, and adhering to patient safety standards.
• Demonstrates a positive work ethic to enhance teamwork in a fast-paced environment and accountability for actions.
• Identifies and enters data into the Radiology Information System and PACS.
• Monitors order entries for all patient radiographic exams.
• Educates and monitors mandatory competencies for patient safety, infection control, fire safety, corporate compliance, and patient confidentiality, including additional assigned educational modules for self-improvement.
• Maintains BCLS Certification.
• Receives, relays, and documents verbal, written, and electronic orders in the patient's medical record.
• For students: Indirect supervision on all exams the student has completed. Students will not image exams they have not completed during clinicals. When imaging departments are not in need of student radiologic technologists, the student will help with finding and testing radiology and non-radiology lead.

Requirements

• Second-year student close to being registry eligible.
• Experience with all patients, understanding age-appropriate guidelines for communication, positioning, and radiation protection.
• Demonstrated excellent customer service skills utilizing critical thinking that shows ingenuity, creativity, and professionalism.
• Excellent attendance record.
• Must be willing to commit to working 20 hours per pay period, including weekdays and weekends, outside of students' clinical time.

Qualifications

The ability to meet the Radiographer's professional role expectations, defined as:

• Critical thinking skills: Evaluate and follow work processes to ensure patient identification, evaluate radiographs for image quality, select correct exposure factors considering the patient's size, age, and pathology.
• Communication: Communicate both verbally and in writing at a professional level.
• English language proficiency: Read, interpret physician's orders, process corresponding paperwork using typing and computer skills, and communicate with patients and families.
• Compassion and professionalism: Display compassion, empathy, and professionalism in interactions with all customers and co-workers, fostering an atmosphere of respect.
• Physical mobility and motor skills:
  • Demonstrate sufficient locomotor and dexterity skills necessary for safe healthcare delivery.
  • Push, pull, assist, and transfer patients from transportation devices to and from the radiography table without injury to self, patient, or others.
  • Push, pull, and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Work standing on feet 90% of the time, wear lead aprons for a minimum of 2 hours, and walk up to 5 miles during a normal workday.
  • Use fine motor skills to manually reach and position the radiographic tube to desired height and angle, using push buttons, knobs, and various controls.
  • Administer emergency care, including performing CPR.
• Sensory abilities:
  • Auditory ability to hear monitor alarms, emergency signals, and cries for help, including in environments where surgical masks are worn (e.g., operating room).
  • Visual ability to assess patient needs for safety, observe technical factors, collimator centering, and all equipment utilized by the radiographer.

Desired Qualifications

• Sectra PACS experience.
• Proficient computer entry skills, including MiChart.

• Taubman Center, 2506 (48109-5326) with rotations to:
  • Alfred Taubman Health Care Center Outpatient Radiology Dept, Second Floor (1620 E. Medical Center Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48109).
  • Frankel Cardiovascular Center Outpatient Radiology Dept, Third Floor.
  • Cancer Center Outpatient Radiology Dept, Level B2.
• Inpatient General Imaging, B1 D423 (48109) with rotations to:
  • ER, OR, Portable/Inpatient Units, GI/GU, etc.
• Mott Pediatric General Imaging (48109) with rotations to:
  • ER, OR, Portable/Inpatient Units, GI/GU, etc.
• Possible outpatient/offsite locations as needed.

The assigned work area may vary and could include CT, Interventional Radiology (IR), or General Imaging. Rotation between departments may be required based on staffing and operational needs.
