Radiation Therapist Lead

About the role

This job applies ionizing radiation to oncology patients in accordance with prescription and instruction of a radiation oncologist. Maintains accurate treatment records, processes orders for specific exams required during treatment, acts as a liaison between the physician, patient and patient's family, and monitors patient for any adverse reactions during radiation therapy. Serves as technical expert on radiation equipment and procedures and functions in a clinical role providing simulation and administering treatment as appropriate. Oversees scheduling of therapeutic staff and daily delivery of radiation therapy and simulations.

Responsibilities

  • Administers radiation therapy to patients in accordance with the prescription and instructions of a radiation oncologist.
  • Maintains schedules of therapeutic staff to ensure appropriate coverage and call rotation and monitors labor, productivity, and adjusts staffing schedules to maintain within budgeted parameters based on volumes.
  • Oversees radiation therapy treatments and simulations to ensure that it is being performed in accordance with policy and procedures.
  • Oversees patient treatment schedules to facilitate operational efficiency of the radiation oncology department and allocates appropriate amount of time and to compress schedules as necessary.
  • Provides clinical and didactic instruction to radiation therapists and radiation therapy students.
  • Implements new processes and workflows with therapeutic radiation therapy staff.
  • Handles daily billing audits and charge capture.
  • Onboards and conducts orientation of newly hired radiation therapy staff.
  • Identifies issues related to radiation therapy delivery and/or quality initiatives and compiles information and data to make recommendations to radiation oncology administrative team for process for quality enhancement.
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

Education: Graduate of an accredited program in radiation therapy technology.

Work Experience: 2 years of experience as a radiation therapist.

Certifications: Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT); Licensed in the state of practice by the Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.

  • Proficiency in using computers, software, and web-based applications, including Excel.
  • Good organizational and time management skills and ability to be self-directed.
  • Extensive knowledge of radiation therapy concepts, applications, and administration.
  • Understanding of the proper use and care all utilized equipment.
  • Ability to chart accurately and maintain all data pertinent to patient's therapy and care.

Physical and Environmental Demands: Medium Work. Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid or tissue and as part of their employment, incumbents are not called upon to perform or assist in emergency care or first aid. Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue. The incumbent works in a patient care area; works in an area where patients enter; works directly with patients; and/or works with specimens that could contain communicable diseases. There may be an occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases. Because the incumbent works within a healthcare setting, there may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning and/or disposal of contaminated waste. The risk level of exposure may increase depending on the essential job duties of the role.
