About the Role
Inova Alexandria Hospital Radiation Oncology is seeking a dedicated Radiation Therapist 2 to join the team. This is a full-time, day-shift position working Monday through Friday, located in Alexandria, VA. The role involves effective communication with patients, families, medical staff, and healthcare team members, as well as administering radiation treatments and performing simulation procedures.
Responsibilities
- Provides education and support tailored to patients' levels of understanding and motivation, including families and caregivers as appropriate.
- Collaborates and communicates with team members, families, physicians, and other healthcare providers to address special needs and facilitate effective treatment.
- Positions patients for initial treatment and verifies set-up per prescriptions.
- Verifies beam parameters, ancillary aids, and blocking via record and verification systems before initiating radiation treatment.
- Detects and resolves or reports unsatisfactory set-ups or errors to physicians.
- Maintains accurate records of daily treatments and documents any corrections resulting from changes in the prescribed treatment course.
- Ensures portal verification films are taken at appropriate intervals and recognizes the need for adjustments in treatment ports.
- Prepares immobilization devices according to physician prescriptions.
- Positions patients for tumor volume definition, films treatment volumes for physician review, and marks/tattoos appropriate body anatomy for daily repositioning.
- Documents or captures patient measurements and machine treatment parameters for dosimetry planning and calculations.
- Acquires Computed Tomography machine data sets for patient positioning, contours, and set-up parameters.
- Attends department in-services, conferences, and meetings to stay updated on new technology and assists in developing new techniques through research or educational demonstrations.
- Demonstrates knowledge of department treatment modalities and protocols in scheduling, set-up, and treatment of patients.
- Performs daily quality assurance on linear accelerators, simulators, and Computed Tomography machines, reporting any discrepancies or erratic operations to physics.
- Verifies operation of emergency shutoffs and interlocks and reports discrepancies.
- Participates or assists with in-vivo dosimetry measurements and special dosimetry.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Education: Associate’s Degree or Certification.
- Experience: 2 years as a staff therapist in a Radiation Therapy department with experience in linear accelerators and patient simulation.
- Certification: American Registered Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) required upon start; Basic Life Support (BLS) from American Heart Association (AHA) required upon start.
