About the role

The Radiation Control Technician position supports laboratory operations by performing a broad range of radiological protection and radioactive material management activities. Key responsibilities include conducting radiological surveys, performing contamination and dose rate surveys, and ensuring worker compliance with safety requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Independently perform radiological surveys and generate associated documents and reports.
  • Perform routine, specialized, and advanced radiological surveys of various work areas.
  • Release materials, equipment, and property from controlled areas to uncontrolled areas.
  • Evaluate radiological conditions and support the development of work authorization and plans.
  • Post and label areas and items controlled for radiological purposes.
  • Respond to and assess radiological incidents and emergencies.
  • Plan and conduct complex radiological work activities.
  • Support the preparation, packaging, and shipment/transfer of radioactive materials.
  • Support the operation related to Material Control and Accountability and Nuclear Material Management.

Requirements

  • Radiation Control Technician level 3: Previous DOE/NRC 3.1 DOD-qualification Radiation Control Technician (RCT)/Health Physic Technician (HPT)/Engineering Laboratory Technician (ELT), or equivalent; 10+ years of relevant experience, including 3 years as a qualified RCT/HPT/ELT; full and comprehensive understanding of radiation measurement and radioisotope handling principles; ability to apply specialized radiation safety, measurement, and handling principles; ability to develop and provide technical advice, instructions, and services for radiation safety; good written, oral communication, and computer skills; ability to work independently and collaborate with technical authorities and SMEs.
  • Radiation Control Technician level 4: 15+ years of relevant experience in radiation measurement, radioisotope handling, and radiation monitoring; extensive technical expertise; strong written, oral communication, and computer skills; ability to utilize complex instrumentation and equipment; technical certification (NNRPT); ability to perform physical requirements including lifting up to 40 lbs, performing radiological surveys, and using fine manipulation, keyboard/mouse use, and simple/power grasping.

Applicants must have a current Job Hazards Questionnaire (or equivalent) on file, complete required training, work safely, adhere to the Lab’s “Stop Work” Authority, and comply with Laboratory policies, standards, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
