R&D- Test Associate Chemist

About the role

The Chemist organizes and executes project testing with minimal direction in support of the Performance Coatings Group. Responsibilities include organizing testing, completing performance testing, generating reports on results, and coordinating multiple projects/timelines simultaneously. The incumbent will maintain test equipment and supplies, train others on lab techniques, and film test protocols. This position reports to the Testing and Certification R&D Senior Group Leader and involves access to confidential and proprietary information.

Responsibilities

• Comply with ISO 17025 practices regarding training, documentation, audits, testing protocols, and data reporting.
• Independently lead multiple projects or rushed requests, ensuring high testing accuracy and attention to detail; provide test data and reports to project submitters.
• Communicate timelines effectively and meet deadlines.
• Handle moderately complex project work, including new laboratory tests or specification testing, and support non-complex projects with fewer tests or higher panel volume.
• Support or lead quality initiatives and facilitate continuous improvement of quality programs.
• Support or lead equipment processes, ensuring adequate instructions for operation, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance; identify opportunities for process improvements.
• Support troubleshooting and root cause investigations to identify risks and solve problems.
• Develop general knowledge of equipment processes and test methods.
• Demonstrate proactive communication skills to collaborate with internal customers (R&D chemists, sales, marketing) and external vendors.
• Mentor, train, or act as a resource for other team members as needed.
• Support management in maintaining the overall budget; recommend new equipment purchases and identify cost-saving opportunities.
• Comply with all department and company policies; perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math field.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the country of employment without needing sponsorship for employment work visa status now or in the future (e.g., OPT, CPT, H1B, EB-1, etc.).
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Knowledge of basic math skills and computer proficiency for data input, communication, and analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience operating a variety of laboratory equipment.
• Troubleshooting or mechanical aptitude.
• Basic understanding of ISO 9001 or ISO 17025 requirements.
• Familiarity with ASTM test methods and following SOPs.

Travel

10% travel required.
