Key Responsibilities
- Quantify performance of atom probe instrumentation by designing, coordinating, and conducting subsystem and instrument performance tests. Report findings through internal reports and technical reviews.
- Develop ion optical simulation tools to predict overall instrument performance. Validate electrostatic models using current generation atom probe instrumentation and make specific recommendations for future performance enhancements.
- Work closely with sales, marketing, applications, and engineering teams to define future generation atom probe instruments.
- Participate in cross functional design reviews of complex mechanical, optical, and electronic assemblies.
- Work closely with electrical, software, and mechanical engineers to design, procure, and test prototype systems.
- Support the Service and Manufacturing groups via hands on trouble shooting and phone support as needed.
- Process development for the manufacture of proprietary components used in the atom probe.
- Evaluation, development, and enhancement of microchannel plate based single particle detection systems.
- Evaluation of materials and development of best practices for ultra-high vacuum (UHV) / high voltage (HV) mechanical designs.
Education & Experience
- MS or PhD in Materials Science, Engineering, Physics, or related field, a must.
- 6-8 years of related industry experience, a must.
- Specific experience with simulation tools, such as Lorentz or Comsol, considered a plus.
- Experience with machine shop tools including CNC mill, lathe, hand tools, etc.
- Proficiency with lab automation software: Python, AI code generation, National Instruments Lab-View
- Proficiency with specific data analysis and modelling software, such as Mathematica or MatLab, considered a plus
Professional Knowledge & Abilities
- Technical Skills:
- Solid fundamental knowledge of engineering, physics, and materials science principles
- Experience with ion optics, electron optics, TOF mass spectrometry, and single particle detection systems.
- Experience with the design and troubleshooting of ultra-high vacuum systems
- Proven track record of complex electro-mechanical product development
- Proficiency with 3D CAD (Solidworks preferred)
- Familiarity with fabrication methods and design for manufacturability
- Proficiency with diagnostic and measurement equipment
- Proficiency with data acquisition and analysis
- Experience with high voltage systems (+/-20kV) and design of high voltage components for in-vacuum use
- Experience with advanced sample preparation workflows for materials science (focused ion beams, electron microscopy, PVD)
- Experience supporting production and service personnel in a real-world high-tech manufacturing environment by providing training, documentation, and troubleshooting.

- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present complex ideas in a multidisciplinary setting
- Flexibility and a willingness to take on diverse challenges and learn new skills outside of the traditional role as needed to solve problems and ensure team success
