R&D Prototype Build Specialist Journeyman

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt | Salary Range: $21.52-$25.78

Summary

Responsible for building R&D prototypes, mockups, and products with direction of shop supervisor. Work with a diverse engineering and build team to perform a variety of tasks to support innovative product developments from concept through production. The level of R&D Prototype Build Specialist (I, II, Journeyman, Sr Journeyman) is dependent upon years of experience and applicable skill level in performing required tasks inside the department.

Responsibilities

• Assemble/build R&D products including concept mockup, spatial mockup, functional prototype, test articles, and high-end show mockup.
• Perform a variety of moderate to complex production assembly operations.
• Utilize diagrams, drawings, 3D model-based definition (MBD), work orders, and oral and written instructions to assemble products and sub-assemblies.
• Read and interpret 2D technical drawings as well as 3D MBD.
• Use a variety of hand tools or production equipment; cross-trained in many shop processes.
• Apply advanced knowledge and understanding of BMS and BAC specifications, and other aerospace specifications.
• Maintain a high level of quality/craftsmanship.
• Perform basic troubleshooting, problem solving, and work with Planners and Engineers to resolve issues.
• Operate tools and machines including band saw, disk sander, rivet gun, router, drills, 3D printer, 4-axis CNC, power supplies, and a variety of hand tools.
• Work with materials such as steel, aluminum, wood, plastics, adhesives, laminates, composite fiberglass/resins, and various rapid prototype materials.
• Foster a team-oriented culture to achieve effective workflow and high product quality.
• Build cohesive team environments to enhance confidence, morale, and mutual respect.
• Analyze and resolve problems in the build flow to ensure optimum efficiency.
• Identify and recommend measures to optimize production methods, shop efficiency, equipment performance, and product quality.
• Maintain a clean and organized shop.
• Control and maintain an optimal combination of tools to facilitate rapid prototype builds.
• Inform R&D Operation Supervisor of any tool needs.
• Maintain a simplified R&D inventory and inspection process with adequate documentation and control.
• Inspect products during builds and consult with engineers to ensure quality and definition.
• Track build status, maintain build schedules based on scope and BOM, and report daily/weekly progress to drive demand dates for design and suppliers.

• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
• Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
• Demonstrate concern and take actions to meet requirements and high standards of quality for internal and external customers.

Level Definitions

• Level I: Entry-level assembler under close supervision; trains to assemble and rework units using visual aids, drawings, and instructions. No experience required.
• Level II: Intermediate assembler performing moderately complex assembly operations with occasional supervision. Requires ability to read diagrams, drawings, and work orders. Typically requires 1 year of assembly experience.
• Journeyman: Advanced assembler performing moderate to complex assembly operations with little to no supervision. Proficient in using hand tools and production equipment; cross-trained in shop processes. Typically requires 2 or more years of assembly experience.
• Sr Journeyman: Senior assembler with in-depth knowledge of all jobs within the area. Can train and advise other employees, plan and delegate work, and maintain high quality/craftsmanship. Typically requires 3 or more years of related experience.
