About the Role

The Thermomechanical Processing Science Team is seeking a Research and Development Engineer to assist research projects investigating the metallurgy of manufacturing. The team works on metal forming and heat-treating projects using equipment such as hydraulic presses, rolling mills, and vacuum heat-treating furnaces. We support a wide variety of programs with an emphasis on identifying creative solutions to meet customer needs.

The successful candidate will work effectively on both independent projects and as part of a team in a science-based prototype manufacturing environment. Responsibilities include coordinating fabrication activities, implementing novel manufacturing solutions, and hands-on work in metal forming.

  • Develop mentoring skills to mentor junior staff and peers in technical and professional growth.
  • Actively participate in professional societies, external working groups, and special assignments.
  • Provide peer review of the work of others across organizations or disciplines.

Requirements

  • Formal training or hands-on experience in forging, drawing, rolling, heat treating, mechanical testing, or other metal fabrication using manual or computer numerically controlled equipment.
  • Understanding of microstructural development during metals manufacturing and heat-treating methods.
  • Experience assisting or contributing to R&D projects.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, computer operations, and computational engineering analysis.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with demonstrated ability to interact with colleagues and customers.
  • Experience presenting research results in technical summaries, reports, or presentations.
  • Ability to lead and manage an R&D project independently or with a small team.

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Qualifications

  • Experience with finite element modeling and/or programming languages (G Code, R, Python, C++, etc.).
  • Familiarity with reading machining drawings.
  • Familiarity with applying engineering simulations or modeling to production environments.
  • Familiarity with heat transfer or stress analysis of manufacturing methods.
  • Willingness to travel.
