This is a hands-on lab technician role supporting the development and testing of new powder coatings in Sherwin-Williams’s North America General Industrial Business. The position is fast-paced, collaborative, and involves working with a team of experts to learn color matching, testing, and application of various powder coatings. Access to confidential and proprietary information is required, and a criminal history review will be conducted.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic computer skills
  • Learn to use color match software
  • Match new colors from standard panels, primarily solid colors of low complexity
  • Understand the relationship between color and product properties, including characteristics and performance
  • Operate equipment such as extruders, mills, and spraying equipment
  • Use analytical balances to obtain accurate and repeatable measurements
  • Demonstrate basic math skills
  • Execute color matches, test properties, and report data to the group leader or Senior Colorist
  • Learn to manage time efficiently and obtain priorities from the Group Leader and Senior Colorist
  • Document formulations for lab work orders in Product Vision and forms designated by the Group Leader
  • Learn and apply processes selected by the Group Leader and Senior Colorists to solve problems
  • Make minor adjustments to formulas based on quality checks for color, gloss, texture, and appearance
  • Organize work and seek assistance from others as needed
  • Perform ITMs (Internal Test Methods) according to set standards
  • Evaluate test results based on ITMs
  • Perform audits on equipment as needed
  • Comply with all safety regulations
  • Maintain a clean work area
  • Work toward meeting goals and timelines set by the group leader
  • Maintain documentation as required
  • Maintain technical knowledge through training

Requirements

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the country of employment without needing sponsorship for an employment work visa (e.g., OPT, CPT, H1B, EB-1) now or in the future
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to distinguish between colors to correctly tint paint to customer specifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one (1) year of work experience in color matching or painting
  • At least one (1) year of work experience with powder coating equipment
