Job Duties

This is a professional, advanced, journey-level position demanding a high degree of technical expertise to resolve a wide range of the most difficult and complex problems encountered in the identification of latent prints. The work of the Latent Print Examiner is performed independently or as a member of a team under the general supervision of the Latent Print Supervisor. The work is performed in an office setting; laboratory environment; and/or at crime scenes.

Incumbents collect and preserve latent prints observing a chain of custody protocol and perform analytical examinations of evidence in accordance with industry standard scientific methodologies. Recover, preserve, and examine evidence following defined analytical methods which may include the use of chemicals, optical and computerized scientific techniques. Maintain established standards of laboratory safety, cleanliness, and efficiency.

• Conduct complex examinations of recovered evidence and develop analytical findings using industry standard methodologies.
• Provide written documentation and expert testimony regarding scientific findings in judicial proceedings.
• May be called upon to assist prosecuting and defense attorneys in preparing evidence for presentation of findings.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

• A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required, however, a candidate may substitute one (1) year of recent and relevant job-related experience for every two (2) years of education.
• Ability to successfully pass a latent print comparison test prior to employment, and the ability to successfully pass a yearly latent print comparison proficiency test during employment.
• Ability to effectively use proper scientific methodology in conducting complex examinations of latent print evidence.
• Ability to remain current of the changes affecting the forensic sciences field/profession.
• Ability to employ safety considerations for handling biohazards and caustic chemicals.
• Ability to employ evidence handling procedures.
• Ability to clearly communicate and present scientific findings and methodologies in judicial proceedings.
• Ability to present forensic science methodology recommendations.
• Ability to maintain professional demeanor and strict confidentiality when dealing with attorneys, court officers, defendants, and the public concerning high profile cases, and/or emotionally charged information/issues.
• Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral reports.

Necessary Special Requirements

• Knowledge of Forensic Photography Protocols.
• Certification by International Association for Identification (IAI) as a Latent Print Examiner, Crime Scene Technician, Crime Scene Analyst or Senior Crime Scene Analyst.

Necessary Special Requirements This is a Civil Service classification. Candidates must work with deceased bodies, body fluids, biologic materials and firearms in a professional and safe manner. All incumbents must be United States citizens and be able to read, write, and speak the English language.
