Quality Tester 1 - Mid Shift

About the role

The Quality Tester 1 serves as the front line of quality performance for production operations and is responsible for testing all samples during routine assessments. This role is also trained in the basic operations of maintaining a production line and may be responsible for these duties at times. The Quality Tester 1 must be knowledgeable of and follow all procedures needed to ensure the proper safe and efficient operation of the quality lab and production floor.

Responsibilities

• Performs basic quality duties such as gathering sample stretch film rolls, measuring widths, weights, testing force to stretch, ultimate stretch, cling, and breaks. Enters all data into the quality database and submits tests for management review, notifying them if issues arise.
• Performs all quality tests needed on shift at a minimum frequency of testing each line one time every 6 hours.
• Performs quality tests after changeovers and on an as-needed basis.
• Performs dimensional testing of all products, including using a tape measure, pi tape measure, and scale to measure and record the width, circumference, and weight of the film. Uses a test stand to measure footage of rolls.
• Performs oscillation checks on all folded edge products.
• Performs ultimate stretch tests on all machine film products by loading the roll on the test stand, threading the film through the test stand rollers, attaching the film to the test drum, and starting the test with the appropriate settings and parameters.
• Performs breaks tests on all products using the appropriate test stand. Differentiates between products to use the correct equipment, loads rolls onto mandrels, threads film onto a drum, and starts tests with appropriate settings. Observes breaks tests for holes and defects, records findings in the database, and reports to management.
• Performs force to stretch tests on all hand film products using the appropriate test stand based on product type.
• Performs cling tests on all products by loading the roll on the test stand, threading the film through the test stand rollers, attaching the film to the test drum, and starting the test with the appropriate settings. Attaches the tail of the film to a load cell that collects force values.
• Performs 24-hour footage tests on machine film rolls to ensure correct footage.
• Reports all issues and out-of-specification results to Team Managers and Senior Operators.
• Maintains proficiency in Line Operator 2 duties through cross-training.
• Trains on quality standards and controls, performs quality testing, completes tasks in the quality lab including Shift Testing, accurately completes quality control paperwork, and reports quality test results to Management.
• Assists with training new Line Operators when placed on the production line.
• Maintains housekeeping in the quality lab and on the line to ensure a clean work environment; prepares the work area for shift change.
• Performs any other duties as requested or assigned by Management.

Requirements

• Technical aptitude to understand machinery and systems within a production environment.
• Mechanical aptitude to understand and properly utilize basic hand tools with accuracy.
• Basic computer and typing skills to perform data entry tasks into a database.
• Ability to understand and properly utilize scales, weights, and other measurement tools with accuracy.
• Ability to understand and properly utilize quality testing equipment and data entry of results.
• Ability to demonstrate sound judgment while adapting to a fast-paced environment and rapid changes.
• Able to juggle multiple tasks and handle unexpected delays or events while maintaining constant attention to detail.
• Strong organizational skills combined with good problem-solving skills.
• Practice and promote teamwork within the organization.
• High level of dependability regarding attendance and punctuality.
• Understanding and ability to communicate using the English language in both written and spoken form or willingness to take ESL classes.
• Basic mathematic skills.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to use hands including fingers to hold, touch, see, feel, grip, squeeze, push, and pull.
• Ability to perform pushing, pulling, and forward exertion on a regular basis.
• Ability to have an overhead extension with arms on a regular basis.
• Ability to use enhanced levels of manual dexterity with arms and hands to operate industrial power tools occasionally.
• Ability to stand and walk continuously on a concrete floor for 12-hour shifts.
• Ability to stand, crouch, stoop, bend, and squat frequently.
• Ability to kneel occasionally.
• Ability to climb stairs and ladders occasionally.
• Ability to work on elevated platforms.
• Ability to climb on uneven surfaces occasionally.
• Ability to regularly lift and/or move between 45-55 lbs.
• Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 65 lbs.
• Ability to understand and communicate verbally, in person, and over a paging system.
• Ability to meet requirements of and utilize all PPE when required.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent (preferred).
• Previous experience in a plastics manufacturing environment (preferred).
• Ability to read and interpret Bill of Materials / Job Packets (preferred).

Environmental Conditions

The physical environment requires the employee to work indoors in a hot or cold and moderately loud setting. Required to use PPE while performing job functions.

Schedule

Work involves overtime, shift rotations, and schedule changes. Requires adherence to deadlines and project completion deadlines.
