Quality Technician

About the Role

The Quality Technician trains employees to execute quality procedures, ensures routine maintenance of all testing equipment, collaborates with other departments to resolve product and service quality problems, oversees the Lab Technician, assists Supervisors with in-house quality decisions, and performs required administrative functions.

Responsibilities

• Comply with all safety rules for personnel and facility protection as defined in the Plant Employee Manual.
• Train Lab Technician and review test results.
• Train Supervisors and Slitter Operators to identify steel defects.
• Train affected employees in the use of measuring equipment.
• Maintain calibrations on lab test equipment.
• Make decisions on the conformance of products to customer specifications during in-process inspections.
• Collaborate with Sales, Purchasing, Production, and Customers to resolve problems as part of an in-house team.
• Work with Purchasing and Production Planning on material problems and material choices for specific jobs.
• Conduct internal ISO audits as needed.
• Perform testing on production jobs as required.
• Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies.
• Verify that jobs meet customer requirements.
• Assist Quality Management with projects related to research and development, production technology, and quality control.
• Maintain and control quality documents.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Associate degree or equivalent experience.
• 2-5 years of experience in the steel industry.
• 1-3 years of experience in quality.

• Digital and analog Rockwell tester
• Micrometer

Working Conditions

This role is based in the plant, which spans two levels (plant on the lower level, office on the upper level) and is directly accessible from the parking lot. Conditions include:

• Seasonal temperature variations from 60 to 95+ degrees.
• Exposure to diesel fumes from trucks moving through the plant.
• Varying noise levels depending on the number of machines in operation.
• Potential hazards such as cuts and crush injuries.

Supervision and Attendance

Supervision and co-worker assistance are available at all times. Unscheduled absences may impact customer requirements due to insufficient staffing.

Consequences of Non-Performance

• Failure to observe safety procedures may result in serious injury, fatality, or damage to material or property.
• Failure to resolve quality issues promptly may cause production delays, customer delivery delays, and potential loss of business.
• Failure to resolve customer quality issues may lead to customer dissatisfaction and loss of business.
• Failure to complete appropriate paperwork may result in inventory shortages or improper customer billing.
