Quality Technician

About the role
Performs various tests on products to ensure quality standards and customer specifications are met (particle size, moisture, color, etc.). Performs scale house duties for the site. The employee is responsible for maintaining compliance with ISO standards, Huber’s Sustainability Management System, and any other regulatory requirements, including air permits, wastewater permits, storm water permits, or other rules as required.
This vacancy is for shift 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Monday through Friday with potential for overtime as needed, including Saturdays at Marble Falls, TX.
Responsibilities
- Proficient in product testing, including Particle Size Analysis, Free Moisture, Loss on Ignition, Brightness.
- Perform in-process and final testing on products utilizing product specifications and instrument operating procedures.
- Perform product testing of all parameters expected by ISO procedures and specifications.
- Obtain samples from Mill Operators and other production personnel in a timely manner.
- Enter quality data into a quality database, ensuring accuracy of test results and documentation.
- Train new or cross-training Quality Technicians.
- Communicate product testing results to appropriate production personnel in a timely manner to ensure production quality and integrity.
- Communicate accurate quality-related information to packaging operators for their shifts.
- Assist with and perform specialized product/customer testing as necessary.
- Maintain proper verification frequencies of QA/QC instrumentation.
- Prepare and send customer Certificates of Analysis, ensuring results comply with customer specifications.
- Interact with customers/vendors during plant visitations or customer site visits as needed.
- Follow the ISO quality system to ensure compliance with the ISO 9001 quality standard; review and recommend updates to ISO documents and procedures.
- Perform select job responsibilities of the Senior Technician in their absence.
- Assist in preparation of customer samples and maintain organization of retain samples.
- Maintain and communicate inventory of lab tools and supplies.
- Actively participate in the continuous improvement program.
- Assist in monitoring and maintaining good housekeeping practices throughout the quality areas.
- Perform scale house duties including scaling all trucks in and out, generating BOLs, and releasing finished products for the site.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
- A High School diploma or GED is required; an associate’s degree or some college (Chemistry/Math) preferred.
- 3–5 years of experience working in a similar Quality Assurance environment.
- Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English.
- Able to access, read, and comprehend Standard Operating Procedures, Safety and Health manuals, and Quality Control terminology (e.g., units of measure).
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and basic statistics (may use a calculator).
- Must act and work in a safe and healthy manner (both laboratory and plant practices).
- Basic knowledge of computers (software and hardware) and willingness to improve skills.
- Good overall communication skills with employees at all levels of the organization.
- Able to handle a high-stress environment due to performing multiple activities independently with time limitations.
Physical Requirements
- Works mostly inside in a climate-controlled indoor laboratory-type environment but may occasionally go into the plant for samples.
- Must be able to ascend and descend stairs.
- Must be able to empty sample buckets as needed during shift.
- Routinely exposed to vibrations, chemicals, and dust for a 12-hour shift.
- Must be able to stand for the majority of a 12-hour shift.
- Must be able to use hands/fingers to feel, hold, and move objects.
- Must use arms to lift/reach.
- Must be able to communicate using a handheld radio as well as a standard telephone.
- Must have good eyesight and be able to wear required PPE (safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, hard hat, gloves, hearing protection, etc.).
- Must be able to transport and retain samples to the appropriate storage area.
