Quality Lab Technician 3 - 2nd Shift

About the role
A Quality Technician III plays a critical role in ensuring that our products, services, and operations meet established customer standards. This position involves conducting thorough examinations, detailed inspections, and various tests to assess compliance with internal and external regulations and standards. The role requires a keen eye for detail, strong analytical skills, and a commitment to upholding the highest standards of quality and safety. This position also involves training less skilled employees on specific techniques and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Inspection Tasks
- Inspect semi-finished components including bolt blank stock, washers, internally and externally threaded fasteners, and raw material for conformance to customer specifications and production/manufacturing drawings.
- Inspect precision machined components and sub-assemblies for conformance to predetermined mechanical standards, specifications, and tolerances according to the company’s quality procedures, production drawings, and industry standards.
- Perform final inspection of close tolerance fasteners by the company’s internal procedures and customer requirements.
- Maintain inspection reports and record inspection data on department-approved forms.
- Use precision measuring equipment and perform detailed dimensional inspections as required.
- Coordinate inspection activities with leads and employees in the area where work is being performed.
- Read and comprehend blueprints; determine methods of inspection to be used when required.
- Inspect, adjust, and verify accuracy of gauges and measuring instruments for conformance to specifications and issue gages to support factory production.
- Review calibration certifications according to quality procedures and purchase order requirements.
- Develop First Article inspection documents and create inspection reports per quality procedures.
- Review final inspection documentation and assist the compliance team as needed.
- Scan paperwork, file, perform data entry, and product certification as needed.
- Process customer returns in accordance with quality procedures and policies.
- Attend PMRT meetings as needed to assist in dispositions of rejection tags.
- Perform preliminary review of product rejections issued by inspectors.
- Train less skilled employees or trainees.
- Lab Technician Tasks
- Perform and assist in physical and metallurgical tests on in-process and final production parts.
- Perform tasks associated with the movement of materials, supplies, and finished goods to designated areas throughout the facility.
- Prepare metallurgical mounts such as grinding, cutting, polishing, and etching.
- Assist in the preparation of in-process tests on setup parts from various manufacturing operations.
- Read and understand drawings and specifications for correct test requirements, procedures, and sampling plans.
- Perform tests associated with Mechanical Testing, such as tensile, shear, fatigue, stress durability, head docility, installation force, torque, and other tests to ensure conformance to quality requirements and/or specifications.
- Report any safety violations, test equipment misusage, and/or improperly performed work to Supervisor.
- Analyze drawings and specifications for correct test requirements, procedures, and sampling plans.
- Verify calibration on all test equipment before use.
- Ensure all jobs and materials have accurate information on identification tags and correct documentation.
- Move parts and materials to and from factories and departments as indicated on material documentation.
- Deliver part samples to the quality lab for inspection and evaluation when required.
- Enter work order information in the Shop Floor System in preparation for shipping.
- Review lab test results to ensure all operations have been performed and completed.
- Assist in the Shipping and Receiving department with stocking and re-stocking, ensuring all products and materials have accurate weight and/or piece count.
- Assist the Preliminary Material Review Team (PMRT).
- Sort parts in the Quality Assurance Lab when needed.
- Conduct lab sampling when needed.
- Verify and inspect raw material as required.
- Assist manufacturing and quality control in determining conformance of in-process and finished products to customer specifications and drawings.
- Ensure maintenance and calibration on all equipment and that raw materials meet specification and calibration requirements.
- Perform data reduction calculations, take photo macro and micrographs.
- Assist engineering in the research of test programs by writing laboratory test reports when necessary.
- Develop new laboratory test procedures and perform developmental and failure analysis programs.
- Assist in writing laboratory test reports and developing new laboratory test procedures and work instructions.
- Train less skilled employees or trainees.
- Gage Room (Metrology Dept) Tasks
- Use GageTrak System (CAL01/CAL02) to create, maintain, and issue all gages used by production.
- Control of Gage Room (CAL03) – monitor daily temperature and humidity requirements in the gage room.
- Use Trulok Setup (CAL04) – use spreadsheet to find correct offset and insert.
- Perform calibration (CAL05 - CAL18) of various gages in-house, including updating entries in the tracking system and calibration stickers (e.g., micrometer, caliper, tri-rolls, broach gages).
- Manage Test Bolt Inventory (CAL19) – control test bolt inventory in the gage room used by operators and technicians; issue test bolts and request additional test bolts as needed from stock.
- New Gage Process (CAL20/CAL21) – request quotes for new gages and input orders into the ordering system Kissflow.
- Calibration Scheduling Control (CAL20, CAL22/23, & CAL26) – request quotes for outside calibration, schedule, and coordinate all activities related to outside or internal calibrations.
- Reporting (CAL25) – send weekly and biweekly reports to all production and quality areas for gage calibration due dates.
- Certification review (CAL24 & CAL27) – review lab and gage certs upon receipt for correct requirements and condition notes.
- Engineering Projects (CAL28) – act as a gage expert and resource for various engineering projects.
- Measurement of Uncertainty Calculation (CAL29) – control and maintain the measurement of uncertainty calculations for all required gages.
- Train less skilled employees or trainees.
- Safety/Compliance
- Adhere to and implement all company HSE (Health, Safety, Environment) policies, procedures, and practices.
- Comply with rules and regulations set forth by Federal, Local, and State government, LISI Aerospace, and HSE Procedures.
- Attend all training provided and adhere to all HSE procedures, policies, and plans, conforming to reporting requirements and safe operating procedures.
- Report any known or suspected nonconformance for all company procedures or legal requirements to management immediately.
- Seek opportunities to improve HSE performance by establishing objectives and targets, measuring progress, and reporting results.
- Implement and suggest waste elimination initiatives related to the function and department, such as recycling opportunities and elimination of paper waste.
Qualifications
- Education and/or Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent education.
- Minimum 5-8 years of metallurgical or physical laboratory experience.
- Understanding of test equipment and lab procedures, or a combination of inspection and lab procedures.
- Completion of college-level mathematics, metallographic, or mechanical engineering is a plus.
