This is an entry-level position responsible for performing basic inspections of aerospace components, assemblies, and materials under supervision. The role focuses on learning aerospace quality standards, inspection techniques, and documentation requirements while supporting compliance with AS9100, FAA, and customer specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform independent visual, mechanical, dimensional, and functional inspections of parts, assemblies, and finished products.
  • Perform in-process, final, and receiving inspections on directed parts, assemblies, and subassemblies.
  • Verify dimensions, tolerances, materials, finishes, and configurations per engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Properly tag, label, and segregate nonconforming material.
  • Ensure proper identification, traceability, and documentation of parts and materials.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and GD&T to determine inspection requirements.
  • Use precision measuring instruments (e.g., calipers, micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges, CMMs).
  • Complete and review inspection documentation, nonconformance reports, and inspection records.
  • Identify, document, and communicate quality issues and trends to quality and production teams.
  • Review, validate, verify, and perform First Article Inspections (FAI) in accordance with AS9102.
  • Ensure compliance with AS9100, FAA, customer, and internal quality requirements.
  • Maintain inspection records in accordance with regulatory and company retention requirements.
  • Support internal, customer, and regulatory audits.
  • Assist with root cause analysis, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide guidance/assistance to Inspector B personnel as needed.
  • Accurately document and report inspection results, nonconformances, and corrective actions in quality systems.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Participate in and complete training related to aerospace quality standards and inspection methods.

Machined Parts and Weldments

  • Inspect highly complex parts using established procedures, checking related dimensions, reverse curves, and compound angles.
  • Establish reference points to check inter-related and coordinated dimensions in different planes and irregular machined surfaces.
  • Inspect machined and/or welded assemblies, castings, forgings, extruded sections, and bar stock of average complexity.
  • Check threads with wires and calculated dimensions to maintain prescribed specifications.
  • Lay out items, marking location points and reference lines in accordance with drawings.
  • Perform mathematical computations to verify interrelated working points in one or two planes.
  • Make setups on surface tables to determine dimensional acceptability.
  • Project flat and contoured shapes from lofts to find exact locations and true sizes.
  • Inspect parts of average complexity, checking related dimensions, contours, curves, and angles.
  • Perform first part inspection to establish inspection procedures for average complexity items.
  • Inspect incoming customer-furnished and bailed equipment for visual acceptance and proper functioning.
  • Check for damage incurred in shipping and handling, and assist in resolving discrepancies.

Tool & Calibration

  • Inspect tools, dies, jigs, or fixtures using precision measurements and perform mathematical computations.
  • Make setups on surface tables to verify working points in one or two planes.
  • Check component and overall dimensioning, hole patterns, trim lines, fits, and parallelisms.
  • Perform regularly scheduled inspection and calibration of shop working standards using primary standards.

Chemical

  • Perform simple chemical tests to determine the nature of substances.
  • Select samples of parts, materials, and solutions for laboratory analysis.
  • Interpret laboratory analysis to determine conformance to prescribed specifications.

Assembly

  • Inspect small parts, sub-assemblies, and major assemblies for conformity to specifications, tolerances, clearances, and workmanship standards.
  • Examine assemblies for metal flush against fixtures, accurate hole drilling, secure fastening, and correct alignment.
  • Analyze functional difficulties in assembly procedures and recommend adjustments.
  • Prepare and maintain a log of inspection points, updating as designs change.

Product Systems

  • Inspect sub-assemblies and assemblies for conformance to specifications, clearances, fit tolerances, alignment, and security.
  • Detect malfunctions such as excessive chatter, pressure, noise, and erratic operation.
  • Analyze inspection difficulties and recommend corrective actions.
  • Review inspection procedures and manuals, suggesting changes to facilitate inspection.
  • Inspect for cleanliness, damage, and completeness.
  • Request removals, adjustments, or replacement of malfunctioning parts.
  • Monitor tests as required.

Bonding

  • Inspect the development and initial setup of standard prototype bonded honeycomb and/or metal assemblies.
  • Check locations, fit, and clearances of parts by comparison with specifications and blueprints.
  • Inspect production assemblies for proper bonding, contour, and surface.
  • Inspect test or core buttons for adhesion, porosity, density, and similar physical qualities.
  • Check honeycomb material after trimming for dimensional accuracy and damage.
  • Inspect standard repair work such as splices, patches, and rebonding.

Finishing and Plating

  • Inspect metal detail parts for anodic, Alodine, cadmium, zinc, chrome, silver, nickel, copper, and other metal plating and treating processes.
  • Check for appearance, thickness, blisters, material defects, and adherence to surface.
  • Inspect parts, assemblies, and areas before and after finishing processes.
  • Ensure proper cleaning, treating, and coating with rust preventatives prior to finishing.
  • Inspect adhesive-coated parts for proper coating and curing.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Technical school or vocational training in manufacturing, machining, or aerospace preferred.
  • 0–2 years of manufacturing or quality-related experience; entry-level candidates with production, assembly, or machining experience encouraged to apply.
  • On-the-job training provided in AS9100, AS9102, and inspection techniques.
  • This position involves access to export-controlled technology requiring U.S. Person status or government authorization. A ‘U.S. Person’ includes U.S. citizens, nationals, permanent residents (green card holders), and individuals granted asylum or refugee status.
