Purpose and Scope
On the Kennedy Propellants and Life Support Services (KPLSS II) program on Kennedy Space Center FL, the Quality Engineer plans and directs activities concerned with the development, application, and maintenance of quality standards for processing materials into partially finished or finished material or product. Quality assurance and quality control are important aspects to this job family.
Essential Responsibilities
- Techically supervises quality projects or major phases of significant quality projects, coordinating the efforts of technical support staff in the performance of assigned project.
- Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge to the completion of significant assignments.
- Provides leadership for quality assurance and quality control support on assigned program(s) and/or areas to ensure that the product is designed, procured, and installed in accordance with customer and company quality requirements.
- Supports department manager with development of quality program procedures.
- Makes frequent decisions using principles and professional independent judgment.
- Develops and applies advanced quality assurance/ control theories and research techniques in the investigation and solution of complex and advanced technical problems on the forefront of new technologies.
- Analyzes, evaluates, and plans methods of approach and organizes means to achieve solution of complex technical problems.
- Conducts and/or supports investigations and tests of considerable complexity.
- Reviews project process and evaluate results.
- Evaluates supplier capabilities to provide required products or services.
- Acts as liaison with outside suppliers in establishing or modifying specifications for purchased items.
- May specialize in particular area of quality control engineering, such as design, incoming material, process control, product evaluation, inventory control, product reliability, research and development, and administrative application.
- Provides technical consultation to supervision, engineers, and technicians.
- Devises and applies testing procedures for parts or sub-assemblies received from outside vendors.
- Participates in the development, maintenance, and refinement of internal quality control and reliability programs.
- Ensures that the company and customer's requirements are met on assigned products, programs, areas, or functions.
- Maintains the site’s nonconformance and corrective/preventive action tracking system.
- Identifies and reports quality problems or trends to supervision.
- Develops corrective actions using various root cause analysis techniques.
- Recommends corrective action to quality problems.
- Develops metrics and performance indicators.
- Provides technical support and advises other departments.
- May work in any of the following areas of quality control/assurance engineering: design, incoming material, process control, product evaluation, inventory control, product reliability, research and development and administrative application.
- Ensures adherence to company policies, procedures, and related government regulations.
- Performs internal audits.
Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
- Bachelor’s degree related to quality, safety, physical science, or engineering with minimum 5 years experience.
- Minimum 3 years experience managing quality-related data.
- Good oral and written communication skills; working knowledge of MS Office program and integrated software applications; organizational skills and ability to perform detail-oriented work are required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using various Root Cause Analysis methods including software.
- Management of Corrective Action/Preventive Action data and use of software tracking system.
- Experience using various hazard analysis and risk assessment techniques.
- Experience with development of ISO 9001 program.
- Auditor/lead auditor certificate desired.
- NACE inspector certification desired.
