The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation is a Tribal health care organization serving nearly 30,000 people across rural southwest Alaska in villages with populations from about 10 to more than 1,000. Bethel, the regional hub and location of the only hospital in the region, has a population of nearly 7,000. The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta features thousands of lakes and two primary rivers—the Kuskokwim and Yukon.

About the role

A Quality Assurance Coordinator (QAC) – Nurse is a highly skilled nursing professional responsible for leading and supporting quality improvement initiatives across clinical departments. This role involves evaluating patient records, clinical documentation, and healthcare outcomes to ensure compliance with regulatory standards, organizational policies, and best practices, while providing feedback for continuous improvement. The QAC ensures all requirements of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Promoting Interoperability Program are met, including timely reporting of all program components. The position coordinates, monitors, and reports on clinical and technological aspects related to meaningful use across the health system.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate hospital or clinical department quality improvement projects and initiatives, including:
    • Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR)
    • Hospital Outpatient Quality Reporting (OQR)
    • Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP)
    • Hospital Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) Program
    • Medicare Promoting Interoperability
    • Quality Improvement Organization (QIO)
    • Quality Payment Program (QPP)
  • Analyze clinical data, patient outcomes, and safety reports to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor policies, procedures, and best practices aimed at enhancing care quality and patient safety.
  • Facilitate root cause analyses and investigations of adverse events, sentinel events, or near misses.
  • Educate and train staff on quality standards, evidence-based practices, compliance requirements, and documentation best practices.
  • Collaborate with clinical teams, administration, and external agencies to meet accreditation and regulatory standards (e.g., Joint Commission, CMS).
  • Monitor performance metrics and prepare reports to communicate progress and outcomes to leadership.
  • Stay current on healthcare quality improvement methodologies, regulatory updates, and industry innovations.
  • Support data collection, auditing, and documentation efforts for quality assurance activities.
  • Support corporate accreditation and licensing processes.
  • Complete annual mandatory orientation/competency and performance improvement evaluation requirements.
  • Participate in special projects, such as team-building initiatives, Tribal Gatherings, Employee Picnics, Patient Safety Week, and the Culture of Safety Survey.
  • Review Quantros incident reports or safety concerns daily and report events to the Performance Improvement Team for discussion and analysis.
  • Participate in the team rotation for facilitating the 10:00 AM Daily CEO Safety and Quality Call, including weekends and holidays.
  • Engage in team meetings, projects, and departmental rounding.
  • Perform general administrative duties, such as answering phones, scheduling meetings, taking minutes, facilitating meetings, managing office supplies, and maintaining the office environment.
  • Research emerging healthcare trends or practices not directly tied to current policy updates.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Five years of progressive experience in a hospital setting.
  • Prior experience in medical record review, quality assurance, or compliance preferred.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license preferred; candidates with equivalent experience will also be considered.
  • Angyaq Quality Systems basic training within 6 months of hire.
  • Healthcare Accreditation Certified Professional (HACP) certification within 2 years of hire.

Skills

  • Strong written communication and document editing skills.
  • Familiarity with accreditation bodies (e.g., Joint Commission, CMS) and healthcare compliance requirements, laws, and regulations.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Attention to detail and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to interpret clinical data and documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines.
  • Proficiency with computers, standard computing platforms, Zoom, and Excel.

Pay

Minimum hourly pay: $42.92.

Schedule

  • Full-time, 80 hours per pay period (40 hours per week).
  • Exempt (salaried) position.
