About the role

Commissioning Engineers I, II, & III are responsible for Level 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 commissioning of base building systems, security systems, life safety systems, Electrical, Mechanical, and EPMS/BMS systems in a Data Center environment. This role oversees, documents, and tracks various aspects of commissioning activities, including testing and validation of connectivity, network infrastructure, security, life safety, building subsystems, transformers, electrical switchgear, UPS, STS, PDU, electrical distribution equipment, chillers, water loops, cooling distribution equipment, Electrical Power Monitoring Systems, and Building Management and automation systems. The role also serves as a project manager and liaison to a third-party commissioning agent.

This position requires work hours to support construction and commissioning activities, which may include nights and/or weekends. It is a platform role that may require an estimated 75% travel to other sites around the U.S.

Responsibilities

• Assist in all site construction activity and installations, coordinating with the QTS Development Team and external construction resources to ensure system design, installation, and testing adhere to operational standards.
• Develop comprehensive commissioning plans for Level 1–5 systems, including connectivity, network infrastructure, security, life safety, building subsystems, electrical, mechanical, and Building Automation components.
• Conduct thorough commissioning activities, ensuring all systems are installed, tested, and validated according to industry standards and client specifications.
• Identify, track, and resolve issues during the commissioning process, collaborating with the project team to address technical challenges and drive continuous improvement.
• Create and/or review detailed commissioning documentation, including test procedures, reports, and as-built documentation, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
• Witness testing of all equipment during commissioning and validate sequence of operations and receipt of operational documentation.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including design engineers, project managers, contractors, commissioning agents, and facilities operations to ensure seamless integration of systems without impacting operational portions of the campus or building.
• Implement quality control measures to ensure the highest standards during the build and commissioning process, adhering to regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
• Develop and test site-specific standard operating procedures (SOP), method of procedures (MOP), and emergency response procedures (ERP) in coordination with facilities operations.
• Provide training to end-users and maintenance personnel on the operation and maintenance of commissioned systems.
• Use the Change Management Process to obtain approval for preventative and corrective maintenance, complete maintenance, and document it using QTS processes and software.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Project Management, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Five or more years of work experience in data center engineering, commissioning, project management, or an equivalent field.
• Background in building maintenance, CCTV and access control systems, network, telecommunications, and/or fire detection/suppression systems.
• Ability to travel to other Data Center locations as required (estimated 75% travel).
• Proficiency with MS Office Suite.
• US Citizenship is required for this position due to federal customer contracts.

Preferred Qualifications

• Firm understanding of mechanical and electrical equipment, systems, and design related to data centers.
• Knowledge of electricity and medium to low voltage electrical distribution systems.
• Experience with emergency backup systems (generators, UPS, battery backup).
• Experience with mechanical cooling solutions (Chillers, CRAH, CRAC, Pumps, Heat Exchangers, etc.).
• Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance, single line drawings, critical scripted work, and sequence of operations.

• Physical ability to perform tasks involving frequent typing, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, and lifting. Regular lifting requirements up to 50 lbs., with heavier weights managed using assistance or lifting aids.
