About the role
The QA Lab Technician I performs test procedures on finished product and reports findings. This role ensures product quality through lab analysis, data entry, and adherence to ISO9001 standards and HSE regulations.
Responsibilities
- Identify off-spec production in lab analysis spreadsheets and the Access inventory database.
- Maintain records of non-conforming product disposition.
- Calibrate and maintain test equipment, ensuring certification per requirements.
- Inventory critical lab supplies weekly and document levels.
- Interpolate Access database daily after entering previous day’s quality data.
- Understand and apply Product Specifications and BOSS (Business Operating System Standards).
- Prepare and store retain samples properly.
- Perform sieve analysis using a Rotap.
- Accurately enter lab test data into the Access database and lab analysis Excel spreadsheet.
- Operate all processes safely and within HSE rules and regulations.
- Conduct established test procedures to measure physical characteristics of finished product (e.g., strength).
- Test raw materials and critical in-process quality parameters, including baghouse density, particle size, volume loss, chemical feed analysis, and dissolved borax/boric acid concentration.
- Prepare and distribute Certificates of Analysis (COAs) for all customer shipments.
- Analyze production and raw material samples for physical and chemical characteristics.
- Investigate customer complaints and returns to identify root causes and corrective actions.
- Review and approve material certifications as necessary.
- Perform special projects or other duties as directed.
- Demonstrate commitment to HSE Essentials in daily activities and participate in HSE improvement initiatives (e.g., Toolbox meetings, Behavioral Based Safety, hazard identification, near-miss reporting, safety work orders, Job Safety Analysis, Is It Safe Tours, and computer-based safety training).
- Maintain good housekeeping in the QA lab and assist with other housekeeping tasks.
- Report all injuries, illnesses, or incidents immediately or as soon as safe to do so.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED; Associate’s Degree in Science or equivalent experience is a plus.
- 1 to 3 years of Quality Assurance Lab experience in a manufacturing environment.
- 1 to 3 years of forklift operations and/or certification preferred.
- Basic computer skills (data entry, email, spreadsheet operations, file manipulation).
- Experience with plant safety systems (e.g., Confined Space entry, Hot Work permitting, Lockout/Tagout).
- Basic skills in industrial mechanical equipment troubleshooting, pipe fitting, minor metal fabrication (including welding), and proper use of mechanical tools.
- Strong teamwork, work ethic, detail orientation, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a manufacturing plant environment, follow safety rules, and wear required PPE.
