Public Works Utility System Operator
About the Role
The Town of Harrisburg is seeking a Utility System Operator within the Public Works Department. This role involves a variety of work in the construction, installation, and repair of water and sewer lines and pump stations. Employees will operate construction equipment, install and repair water and sewer pipes, inspect and repair sewer lift stations and pumps, make taps to water and sewer mains, install hydrants, meters, and valves, read meters, and perform repairs to the water and sewer system.
Work environments include both indoor and outdoor settings, with exposure to extreme temperatures, loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. The role is subject to OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens and may require on-call and call-back work. Work is performed under regular supervision and evaluated through observation and inspection for adherence to instructions and safety practices.
Requirements
- Graduation from high school.
- Considerable experience in related construction or utility maintenance work, including heavy equipment operation.
- At least one year of experience in Public Works maintenance or an equivalent field.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License.
- Possession of a valid certification by the State of NC in water distribution, wastewater collection, backflow prevention and cross-connection, or other certifications as required by the Town (e.g., Grade I Collection Certification or Grade C Distribution Certification).

Pay
Hiring range: $21.00/hr. – $26.12/hr. Starting pay rate depends on qualifications and prior experience.
