Public Works Utility System Crew Leader

About the role

The Utility System Crew Leader leads and participates in a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work as a leader or member of a crew engaged in the construction, installation, and repair of water and sewer lines, meters, hydrants, valves, and other appurtenances.

• Construct new water and sewer lines
• Make water and sewer taps
• Install new water meters and meter boxes
• Install hydrants, meters, and valves
• Repair the water distribution and sewer collection system
• Provide field customer service to check water leaks and high usage complaints
• Connect and disconnect service
• Maintain hydrants and valves
• Troubleshoot issues
• Locate water lines for other contractors
• Clear water line easements
• Operate heavy construction equipment at a skilled level

Employees are subject to working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. The employee is also subject to on-call and call-back work and must adhere to OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens.

Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation and inspection for adherence to instructions and standard trade and safety practices.

Requirements

• Graduation from high school
• At least five years of experience in utility system operations or a related field, including considerable experience in the maintenance or construction of water and/or sewer utilities and skilled heavy construction equipment operation
• Considerable leadership and supervisory experience in water distribution and/or sewer collection system maintenance or construction
• Possession of a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
• Possession of at least three State of North Carolina certifications in water distribution, wastewater collection, backflow prevention and cross-connection control, and/or other certifications as required by the Town of Harrisburg

Pay

The hiring range is $26.42/hr. – $32.86/hr. Starting pay rate will be dependent on qualifications and prior experience. Eligible for a $2,500 sign-on bonus upon hire.
