Crew Leader - Utilities

About the role

Provides leadership in the Utility section of the Public Works maintenance programs for all public infrastructure within the City of Friendswood. Supervises maintenance crews daily and operates heavy and light equipment to construct or maintain public water and sanitary sewer infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Able and willing to perform utility maintenance duties regularly.
• Operate heavy equipment (e.g., backhoe/loader, excavator, haul truck, dump truck, combination jet/vacuum truck) as required.
• Operate light or heavy trucks to transport crewmembers, materials, and equipment to and from worksites.
• Perform repairs using a variety of tools and equipment.
• Address and resolve simple citizen complaints or problems related to city infrastructure while in the field.
• Assist the Superintendent in inspecting completed work for quality and completeness.
• Oversee the implementation of a preventative maintenance program for all equipment.
• Estimate personnel needs and assign work accordingly.
• Assist in overseeing the safe operation and proper maintenance of division vehicles and equipment.
• Perform related duties as assigned (hands-on leadership).

Requirements

• Three to five years of supervisory or related experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
• Class D Water Distribution License.
• Class 1 Collection License.

Working Conditions

• Requires heavy lifting (greater than 50 pounds) and extended periods of sitting, walking, and standing.
• Constant exposure to dirt, dust, noise, heat, cold, and dampness; occasional exposure to odors, fumes, and poor lighting.
• May require above-average agility, dexterity, and physical exertion for long periods.
• Most of the workday is spent outside in all weather conditions.
• Position is Emergency Essential, requiring 24-hour availability during emergencies.
