Public Works - Transportation Maintenance Worker III

General

A Transportation Maintenance Worker II assigned to Park County Public Works is an advance level position and performs skilled technical procedures in Public Works maintenance and construction in road ways, right-of-way's and easements.

Essential Duties

• Operate heavy equipment including motor grader, loader and/or single and tandem axel plow trucks for road maintenance, construction and snow removal.
• Be available to assist with emergencies and snow removal at any time including weekends and holidays.
• Must be able to put tire chains on trucks and equipment.
• Perform maintenance on equipment and vehicles including preventive maintenance, minor welding, fabrications and assisting with major repairs on occasion such as tire repair, replacement of cutting edges, etc.
• Perform manual labor including lifting 50 pounds routinely and 80 pounds on occasion for patching, culvert maintenance and crack sealing.
• Have a level of proficiency with equipment and trucks including but not limited to chip spreader, reclaimer and low boy.
• Work unsupervised, be self-motivated and act as a crew leader as needed.
• Train TMW I and TMW II employees in the operation of Park County equipment, trucks and safety standards.
• Assist with drainage operations including but not limited to culvert installation, culvert cleaning, culvert thawing and pot holing for utilities.
• Participate in (Emergency Support Functions) ESF 1 and ESF 3.
• Minimum of four LTAP and in-house training, along with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Flagger Certifications.
• Assist with flagging during traffic control operations.
• Other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Demonstrate basic abilities to operate Park County owned equipment including but not limited to large and small excavators with the ability to safely work around utilities, low boy trailers, end dump trailers, water tankers.
• Demonstrate ability to provide day-to-day maintenance of equipment including welding abilities to perform minor repairs as well as minor fabrications.
• Ability to train and act as a lead crew member as needed.
• Have the ability to operate equipment and all types of trucks including, hauling equipment and materials, building and shaping roads to establish proper crown, backslopes and fore slops, apply magnesium chloride and other base stabilization materials, haul to or operator chip spreaders and pavers.
• Ability to work independently.
• Under guidance from District Supervisor or Assistant District Supervisor act as Team Leader for various projects.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
• Reasonable effective verbal communication skills.
• Basic computer skills.
• Possess a Flagger Certification card.

Schedule

Some evenings, weekends and holidays may be required. The normal work week is 40 hours. Overtime may be required for projects, emergencies and snow removal. Employees will report to their assigned shop or assigned work location and may be reassigned based upon needs of the Public Works Department. Operation hours are 6:00am to 4:30pm. Overtime may be approved or required by Fleet Manager or Director.

Working Environment and Physical Activities

• Employees will report to their assigned shop or assigned work location and may be reassigned based upon needs of the Public Works Department.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work in all types of conditions including rain, snow, ice and extreme temperatures.
• This position may require exposure to dirt, grease and chemicals typical in a construction environment or maintenance shop.
• The employees are frequently required to walk, sit, stand, use arms, legs, hands, feet and meet DOT (Department of Transportation) physical requirements.
• The ability to lift and carry 50 pounds routinely and up to 100 pounds on occasion.
• Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) will be provided to employees as required.

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Minimum five years' experience as a heavy equipment operator and/or truck driver for the construction and maintenance of roads or any equivalent combination of experience or training.
• To achieve 50% or greater of pay a Class B CDL is required
• Possession of a valid Colorado Commercial Class A Driver's License with tanker endorsement.
• Must possess current DOT Medical Card

Pre-Employment Requirements

• Must pass background check
• Must pass pre-employment motor vehicle record check
• Must pass pre-employment alcohol and drug test
• Must pass pre-employment Equipment Testing and/or Driver's Road Test Examination

Probation Requirements

• At the end of the six-month probation employees are required to safely and proficiently operate the following:
• Successful completion of New Miner MSHA training, including knowledge of all rules and regulations to work in Park County gravel pits.
• Successful completion of a minimum of four LTAP or equivalent trainings related to road maintenance operations.
• Perform as a trainer on equipment and trucks.
• Possess Flagger Certification Card.
