Public Works Maintenance Worker

Responsibilities

• Operate a variety of small to medium maintenance equipment
• Collection of yard waste and bulk items within Town limits
• Snow removal
• Repair and maintenance of the Town’s water and wastewater systems, streets, signage and Town responsible grounds (including right-of-ways, vacant lots and buildings)
• Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs to assigned equipment
• Assist crews in other tasks such as repairing water and sewer lines, patching asphalt, repairing concrete, small construction projects, stormwater system maintenance and installation and repair of street signs
• Be conscious of safety methods to avoid injury to self and others and enforce Town policies regarding size of yard waste loads, types of materials, and exercise discretion in using equipment safely in tight locations and around traffic
• Subject to hazards of maintenance work including working inside/outside in extreme hot and cold weather, exposure to confined spaces, noise, oils, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, and chemicals
• Subject to standby and call-out during assigned periods and expected to respond to all emergencies when they arise

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or equivalent, with a minimum of 1 year of experience in solid waste collections, utilities or general construction; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Must possess a valid NC or SC Driver’s License with a safe driving record
• Obtain a NC or SC Class B Commercial Driver’s License before the six‑month introductory period

Pay

The salary range is $40,176 - $49,974 and the starting salary will depend on qualifications and prior experience.
