Public Work - Chief Mechanic

Performs lead and skilled automotive equipment maintenance and repair work. Oversees diagnosing, scheduling, and maintaining vehicle maintenance, as well as maintaining vehicle records to ensure equipment is in proper working order efficiently. Manages and monitors the equipment preventative maintenance schedule.

Responsibilities

• Inspect and diagnose mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic defects and problems on light and heavy-duty equipment and perform necessary repairs.
• Provide repair assistance on-site, including all 5 shops and remote locations.
• Oversee assistant in cost research for purchasing parts and supplies for repair and maintenance needs.
• Oversee assistant in maintaining records of time, materials, parts, and work performed.
• Prioritize equipment and repairs based on county-wide needs.
• Evaluate reported breakdowns and assign repairs to road maintenance shops if appropriate.
• Report on equipment status, priority changes, and shop repair assignments as requested.
• Contribute to developing and maintaining equipment management systems, including preventative maintenance scheduling and monitoring.
• Assist with additional manpower for maintenance or construction of County roads when needed.
• Use independent judgment and initiative in evaluating problems and developing solutions.
• Perform all work in accordance with sound safety practices.
• Respond to public inquiries courteously and provide information within scope of knowledge and authority.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by training and certifications in automotive equipment maintenance and repair.
• Six years of increasingly responsible experience in maintenance and repair of light and heavy equipment, including one year of administrative and supervisory responsibility.
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A required within the first year of hire.
• Current Flagging and Traffic Control Card and First Aid certification, or ability to acquire within a determined timeframe.
• Certifications in Master Mechanic, Diesel Mechanics, and Air Conditioning are desired but not required.

Knowledge

• Preventative maintenance and repair programs for light and heavy-duty equipment.
• Gasoline and diesel engines, automatic and manual transmissions, hydraulics, shop equipment, and welding and cutting.
• Automotive shop administrative procedures or practices.
• Personal computers and software used in an automotive repair shop.
• Work hazards and safety procedures, including personal and public safety matters.

Skills

• Diagnose defects and repair a wide variety of light and heavy-duty equipment.
• Operate hand and power tools used in automotive maintenance work.
• Schedule, organize, maintain, coordinate, diagnose, and repair county-owned equipment.
• Communicate orally and in writing; read and apply information from repair and parts manuals.

Physical Demands and Environment

The working environment is mainly a mobile automotive repair setting and may include exposure to all types of weather and temperature conditions. Duties require:

• Walking on various surfaces, including rough terrain.
• Sitting, standing, maintaining balance, climbing stairs, ladders, and inclines.
• Kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, and twisting.
• Sense of touch, finger dexterity, and gripping with fingers and hands.
• Ability to transport 50-100 pounds.
• Operating passenger vehicles, trucks, and construction equipment.
• Working alone and in remote areas.
• Wearing protective gear such as hard hats, safety glasses or goggles, welding helmets, ear plugs or muffs, respirators, and rubber or leather gloves as assigned by supervisor.

Pay

$69,311.71 - $74,311.71 depending on experience.
