About the role
The City of Valdez Public Safety Department is accepting applications for a Public Safety Technician. This is a fully benefited, hourly position working a non-standard schedule.
Responsibilities
- Answers incoming emergency and non-emergency calls by telephone or radio; uses GPS/GIS systems to track callers and emergency situations;
- Interviews callers and gathers details on complaints; relays pertinent information to law enforcement and emergency services personnel; provides information and assistance to the public;
- Dispatches calls for service to available law enforcement and emergency services personnel;
- Maintains status and awareness of Police patrol units and monitors alarms; tracks the location and activities of all officers on duty;
- Provides detailed call information to officers and emergency services personnel as needed; monitors message traffic and relays important information to officers;
- Performs inquiries and criminal history checks for officers through National Crime Information Center (NCIC), and Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN);
- Maintains paperwork and records for Police Department, including case reports, court documents, memos, letters, and confidential records; issues licenses and permits;
- Processes authorized release of individuals detained; maintains residents' property, financial and detention records; files and distributes records as required;
- Attend 3 week Municipal Corrections Academy.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent;
- Two (2) years of experience which involved a substantial amount of public contact and office clerical duties;
- State of Alaska Driver's license;
- Clear criminal record;
- Pass Municipal Corrections Academy, obtain Certifications for Taser, OC, Emergency Medical Dispatch, CPR & First Aide, APSIN/NCIC Access.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of Police and Fire Departments' standard policies and procedures for dispatching law enforcement officers and other emergency services;
- Federal, State, and City laws related to inmates, Alaska standards pertaining to detention facilities, and detention facility policy and procedures;
- Behavior patterns of incarcerated persons;
- Techniques of detainee control, defensive tactics, and discipline protocols;
- Personal computers, and related law enforcement communications equipment;
- Local geographical area, road systems, and the locations of important buildings.
Skills/Abilities
- Ability to multi-task in the performance of daily duties while maintaining confidentiality of private and sensitive information;
- Ability to perform a number of cognitive processes, including and not limited to, thinking of a number of ideas or alternatives about a given incident, remembering information pertaining to details of recent incidents, comparing letters, numbers, objects, pictures or patterns quickly and accurately and choosing between two or more sources of information;
- Provide e-mail and phone with a sophisticated law enforcement automated dispatching system;
- Supervise inmate activities, write and complete accurate reports and observations;
- Operate booking equipment, including cameras and fingerprinting equipment, typewriters, computer data entry programs, and standard security hardware;
- Ability to use verbal and & physical means to ensure the safety of inmates and personnel.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Work is performed in a high call volume emergency dispatch environment. May be subject to extended work periods without relief, periods of high call volume and stressful situations.
- Corrections work is performed in a detention facility. Personnel may be exposed to combative or hostile individuals and potential physical harm.
- Maintain a level of physical fitness to meet Department standards.

- Two-way radio, Taser, handcuffs and waist chains, OC, special locks and keys & fingerprint scanner.
Benefits
- Health Insurance- Currently monthly employee paid premium is approximately $132.00 per month for comprehensive family medical, RX, dental, vision, & hearing.

- Deductible: $25 per person not to exceed $75 per family. Maximum annual benefit of $2500 per person.
- Cleaning & exams pay at 100% with no deductible.
- Orthodontics for dependents up to age 19.
- Implants are covered not to exceed annual benefit maximums. No Deductible. One exam per family member per year. Lenses each year covered at 90%. A year supply of contacts annually covered at 50%. Frames every other year covered at 90% not to exceed $200. Lasik coverage - $2000 lifetime benefit. No Deductible. Exam is covered at 90%. Device is covered at 50%.

- Coverage for children of $10,000 at $.56 per pay period for all children on plan.
- Retirement Plans State of Alaska Public Employee Retirement System- 8% pre-tax contribution to PERS Tier IV Defined Contribution Plan. 5% city match. 5-year vesting schedule.
- Pre-tax contribution into a 457 plan, not to exceed federal limitations (2025 is $23,500) - no waiting period to enroll. City will match not to exceed 6.2% for regular employees and 9.3% for executive staff into a 401(a) after 90 days of employment.
- Paid Time Off- New employees accrue 24 days per year for first 2 years of service. Hourly employees can accrue compensatory time in lieu of overtime at the rate of 1.5 hours per hour worked.
- Holidays- The City recognizes 13.5 holidays per year
