Public Safety Responder

About the Role

As a member of the UC Irvine Police Department, the Public Safety Responder assists in monitoring, observing, and reporting public safety concerns and conditions. The essential functions listed below are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties that may be assigned to this position, nor does it restrict duties that may be assigned to this position if such duties are reasonably related to the position.

Responsibilities

• Provide information, directions, and general assistance
• Patrol and respond to calls for service at various UCI properties
• Respond to emergencies like disturbances or medical crises
• Monitor suspicious activity
• Provide escorts
• Assist with the de-escalation of violent situations
• In health settings, serve as a direct patient-facing position often found in the emergency department and various clinical settings
• Provide patient, visitor and staff escorts
• Act as a security and safety presence within healthcare facilities
• Assist in placing persons in restraints
• Write reports
• Monitor patients as needed
• Staff and monitor security systems, including cameras, monitors and alarms
• Conduct themselves professionally and ethically while enforcing UCI and UCI Health policies and procedures
• Work assigned posts
• Conduct foot, bike, and vehicle patrols
• Provide excellent customer service to patients, visitors, students, faculty and staff
• Perform visitor control
• De-escalate and intervene in combative situations
• Staff the Public Safety Operations Center (PSOC) and provide real-time intelligence through alarms, radios, cameras, and direct observation to the Health Division
• Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Must be licensed and able to operate a motor vehicle and/or golf cart style vehicle safely
• Must be able to qualify to use a Taser (Electronic Control Device) effectively and safely
• Must be able to demonstrate good decision making skills and judgment skills when interacting with the public as well as in high stress incidents that may include medical and mental health crisis situations and emergency situations
• Must be able to work variable shifts including: days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
• Must be able to read, write and speak English
• Must be able to display excellent customer service
• Must be able to conduct sustained foot and/or bike patrols, or extended stationary (standing/sitting) post assignments
• Must be able to monitor and effectively use public safety alarms, radios, and video surveillance systems
• Must be able to communicate effectively
• Valid California Driver's License
• Valid California BSIS Security Guard License
• Driver's License Required to hold a valid drivers license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program

Preferred Qualifications

• Hospital Security Experience
• Experience working in a University environment
• Bilingual is a plus
• 1-3 years prior experience working a position that requires interaction with the public and providing services
