Public Safety Officer V

About the role

Under the general supervision of a designated supervisor, perform law enforcement work concerned with protecting the lives and property of the public, maintaining law and order, detecting and apprehending suspects in criminal cases, crime prevention, community relations and educational programs/activities.

Responsibilities

• Conduct arrest and detention activities
• Execute search and seizure within investigations, arrests, and warrant executions
• Control unruly crowds and hostile persons during civil disorders
• Enforce civil process and serve orders and process
• Use verbal skills to deescalate agitated individuals
• Prepare complaints and warrants for court and UNH administrative actions
• Assess and correct personal and facility risks for crime prevention programs
• Collect intelligence and evidence, conduct interviews, and perform searches
• Enforce motor vehicle and criminal laws, policies, rules, and regulations of the University Police Department, the University System of New Hampshire, federal, state, and local laws and ordinances
• Make frequent contacts with the public and other law enforcement officers requiring diplomacy to obtain vital information for cases, accident investigations, and reviews
• Perform patrol duties in assigned areas, buildings, streets, and grounds, including frequent travel and standing, walking, and occasional strenuous positions under varying climatic conditions
• Exercise discretion under state and federal law in the use of force, including the use of physical force and deescalation techniques
• Operate law enforcement and job-related equipment
• Participate in special events and render assistance to the public
• Enforce college/university rules and regulations

Requirements

• High school graduation or equivalent
• Two years of progressive experience with a public safety agency or equivalent
• Minimum score of 75% in the Police Combat Practical Pistol Course based upon New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council standards for Police Firearms Instructors
• Pass a physical examination and fitness test
• No criminal record other than minor motor vehicle violations
• Valid New Hampshire driver's license
• Certified as a full-time police officer by the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council within one year of appointment
• Pass a background investigation and psychological/political screening

Preferred Qualifications

• Degree in Criminal Justice from an accredited college/university
• Experience as a Police Officer with a Campus Law Enforcement Agency
• Possession of a valid New Hampshire Motorcycle license
• Experience as a full-time or part-time certified police officer with a City/Town/County or State law enforcement agency
• Demonstrated knowledge of law enforcement, Safety Services, and Communication Services practices, technology, and methodology
• Demonstrated skill in the use and care of law enforcement and job-related equipment
