Founded in 1968 to meet the post-secondary and continuing education needs of Cecil County residents, Cecil College has been serving the community and shaping its future for more than 50 years. The College is governed by a Board of Trustees appointed by the governor. Cecil College is centrally located in Maryland’s most northeastern county, just one half mile from Interstate 95, easily accessible from Philadelphia, Baltimore, Wilmington, Delaware, and surrounding areas. With a diverse student population, Cecil College enrolls approximately 2,500 credit students and 3,400 non-credit students, offering associate degrees, certificate programs, and non-credit classes. Employees of Cecil College, including instructors for online and virtual courses, must be residents of Maryland or the contiguous states of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, or the District of Columbia. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the US, as the College does not offer Visa sponsorships.

Responsibilities

• Performs investigative and general patrol duties related to building security, personal safety, and protection of property.
• Patrols campus facilities and grounds to observe and ensure the safety and security of persons, buildings, and property, including foot and vehicle patrols under all weather conditions.
• Investigates crimes and complaints by:
  • Obtaining initial data through personal questioning of complainants, witnesses, and others.
  • Examining incident areas, gathering evidence, and checking relevant documents.
  • Recording pertinent information and writing comprehensive reports.
  • Giving testimony and introducing evidence in judicial proceedings while maintaining confidentiality.
• Handles complaints, desk telephone duties, and lost-and-found articles; monitors alarm systems and maintains continuous radio communication with security personnel.
• Assists the college community by providing information and guidance on personal security and safety.
• Responds to fire alarms, assists with evacuations, and resets alarm systems.
• Administers first aid, coordinates emergency response, and provides initial support to victims in traumatic situations.
• Collaborates with the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office, Elkton Police, and other law enforcement agencies on college-related investigations.
• Enforces college policies and procedures fairly and consistently.
• Patrols parking lots, enforces parking policies, and issues violations as warranted.
• Responds to security alarms, assists law enforcement, detains unlawful intruders, and investigates false alarms.
• Provides helpful and professional advice and information to the public regarding campus policies and procedures.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Completion of courses in law enforcement or security officer training at community colleges or similar institutions is preferred.
• Ability to pass Maryland First Responder course and obtain First Aid and CPR certification within the first year.
• Some security/safety experience preferred.
• Knowledge of policies and regulations.
• Must be a resident of Maryland or contiguous states (Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, or the District of Columbia).
• Must be currently authorized to work in the US (no Visa sponsorship provided).

Physical Conditions and Work Environment

• Job responsibilities are performed primarily in a school environment with moderate noise levels.
• Must operate under stressful conditions and respond to emergency situations.
• Standing: Required for 75–85% of the work shift on various surfaces, with periods of up to 3.5 hours at a time.
• Walking: Required for 55–75% of the workday, including distances up to 500 yards at a time.
• Lifting: Occasional lifting of equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Hazards: Work involves assessing life-threatening situations and making decisions that affect the college’s reputation.

• Ability to understand, follow, and enforce safety codes, regulations, and procedures.
• Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
• Proficiency in using Windows-based computer systems for report preparation.

Conditions of Employment

• Satisfactory criminal, credit, and background checks required.
• Must maintain a physical fitness level sufficient to perform actions in emergency situations.
• Must remain drug-free and have no felony convictions.

Schedule

Work schedule may vary during critical periods, requiring evening, Saturday, or Sunday hours as needed by the College. Hours will not exceed 29 per week.

Pay

This is a non-exempt (hourly), overtime-eligible position with a salary of $20.00 per hour.
